I am really into "Hardcore Jollies" at the moment. It seems to be pretty underrated as far as Funkadelic albums go.

Rick James - Come Get It
Rick James - Bustin' Out of L Seven
Sly Stone - High On You
Bar Kays - Money Talks
Isley Brothers - The Heat Is On
Isley Brothers - Go For Your Guns
Isley Brothers - Showdown
Slave - Slave
Slave -Just A Touch Of Love
(actually, I would choose Stone Jam over the other Slave albums , but, technically, that's not a 70's album...)

It's so many as far as I'm concerned. But uh, :

Ohio Players
Skin Tight
Fire
Honey

Funkadelic 1971-78 From "Free Your Mind And Your Ass Will Follow" to One Nation Under A Groove" and every one of their albums in between.
Parliament 1974-1978 From "Chocolate City" to "Motor Booty Affair".
Sly Stone "Fresh"
Bootsy 1976-1979

But if u put a gun up to my head, I would have to say "Mothership Connection".

If you can't find this:

Get this:

Or just splurge and get this, their first four albums collectively:

But be warned: Mandrill's typical classification as a Funk band is misleading. Sure they played Funk, but they also played Latin, Soul, Fusion, and what has come to be known as World Music. Think of a combination of Santana + War + Parliament/Funkadelic + Earth Wind & Fire = Mandrill. But they don't sound like anyone else, and their musical chops are the equal of ANY of those bands, if not better. The most underrated and criminally overlooked "Funk Band" ever.

And for an unpredictable Parliament album suggestion, the most underrated album in their catalog, The Motor Booty Affair:

Oh yeah.
Butterfly is my choice for a ballad that eventually gets funky.
Beautiful tune.

Spank-A-Lee just ROCKS it from the opening drum licks and never lets up.
If you listen to the last few solo licks Benny Maupin plays on the tune,
i'm convinced he blew the pads out of the horn and had to throw it away.

It's just a flame-thrower.
