What's always perplexed me about the collective opinion about Madonna is this. When she first started out, people were shocked that she was white cuz her voice was "too soulful not to be black". And that was before her singing really developed. I think her voice has a rich, pleading quality to it that really works well, especially for her ballads.

Janet's voice is nice, but not something that really moves me.

but to answer the question,I'd have to go with Madonna (surprise,surprise,lol).I have nothing against Janet and I like alot of her 80s songs.But I just feel that Madonna has evolved more as an artist,and is more likely than Janet to try new sounds and styles.For the most part,Janet's music is basically just R&B/dance,which is fine.But Madonna has done R&B (her debut album in 1983...'Bedtime Stories' in 1994,etc),techno/electronica('Ray Of Light'),showtunes ('I'm Breathless'),torch songs ('Evita' soundtrack),edgy dance tracks ('Erotica'),even country-influenced sounds ('Music').

but Janet has had more success as an actress ('Good Times'...'Fame'....that Eddie Murphy film...)

This question hurts so much. Like choosing between a mother and a sister.

I like Janet much better than Madonna, however I have to go with Madonna on this one because as Davideye said, she is always re-inventing herself and her look. I don't like her style and I hate how pretentious she is, but she has been much more interesting than Janet. Janet hasn't done anything interesting in a few years.

I love Madonna. But I LOOOOOVE Janet.
