WTF? - Macy Gray's Greatest Hits?

I mean... I've only heard maybe two or three songs (if that) on the radio from her, let alone a multitude of songs that would constitute a greatest hits package... but, here it is!

And get a load of the track list:

Track List

1. I Try 3:59
2. Do Something 5:00
3. Still 4:15
4. Why Didn't You Call Me 3:13
5. I've Committed Murder 5:00
6. Sexual Revolution 4:46
7. Sweet Baby 3:51
8. Boo 4:25
9. When I See You 3:43
10. It Ain't the Money / Pharoahe Monch 4:07
11. She Ain't Right for You 4:12
12. Love Is Gonna Get You 3:00
13. Walk This Way 3:31
14. Demons 3:14 - Bonus Track
15. When I See You 6:35 - Bonus Track / Bugz in the Attic Remix
16. I've Commited Murder 4:38 - Bonus Track / Gang Starr Remix -- Main Street Mix
17. Sexual Revolution 3:32 - Bonus Track / Norman Cook Radio Version @128 BPM

Okay... so I only recognize maybe two songs... maybe I'd know them if I heard them... but, still... with a couple albums out, neither of them huge successes by industry standards, how can one put out a cd of greatest hits? confuse

Can someone explain this to me?

You only need 2 CDs to have a Greatest Hits, so it's not too hard to fill the quota.

Yeah,it's amazing how today's artists release "Greatest Hits" compilations after only a few albums confuse

And let's face it,most of the songs on this compilation were not even "hits".They're just album tracks posing as the real thing.Macy's only had about two or three songs that can truly be called hits.

Still, greatest HITS implies, she's had HITS! PLURAL, more than one. I think only "I Try" can constitue as the only REAL hit she's had...

Britney Spears (though I can't stand her) has actually had hits (and don't tell me she's got a greatest hits cd too! eek ).

Remember when an artist made about 5 - 6 cd's (albums), actually had HITS (you know, number 1's, or in the Top Ten, then, maybe put out a GH package?

sigh

True greatest hits packages: (in no particular order)

Stevie Wonder's Musiquarium
The Beatles Number Ones
Michael Jackson's Number Ones
Elvis' Number Ones
Mariah Carey's Number Ones
Whitney Houston's Greatest Hits (2 CD's of slow and fast jams)
Ladies and Gentleman, The Very Best of George Michael (2 CD's)
Prince: The Hits 1 & 2/ The B-Sides (MoFo even had hits on the fuckin' B sides!)
Earth Wind & Fire Vol.s 1 & 2
Billy Joel Vol.s 1,2 and 3!
Marvin Gay Anthology
Supremes Anthology
David Bowie
James Taylor GH 1 & 2
etc... etc.. etc....

confused

For some reason, I lost interest in Macy after her first album. No idea why, but I haven't even heard her second album, or even know how many albums she's put out. Does she only have two?

doh! I just read the posts above me regarding how many albums she's done. lol

Actually Britney is releasing a greatest hits album next, from what i've heard.

MJ's Number Ones was a bad collection because he had songs in there that weren't Number ones and songs that weren't even hits.

I would add Madonna's Immaculate Collection to that list.

This was a contractual thing.

Sony has let her go after only 3 albums and this is their way of closing the deal...a 'hits' collection...whether it be that the artist truly only had 1 or 2 singles that had chart impact.

I'm sure Macy had little or no impact on this release. This is Sony just trying to cash in and maybe make up for any losses on the money they spent marketing the last 2 albums (ID and TROUBLE WITH BEING MYSELF)....I remember the ID record had a massive amount of hype behind it but the album failed to do what her 3 million selling debut did. It sold somewhere in the 500,000-600,000 range and I'm sure Sony lost money.

The last album had minimal hype and sold even worse.

This is just an example on how fickle the industry and the public have become. Artists become washed up after only 2 albums and the public have moved on to the next big thing. This is why we have seen more and more 'hit's collections by aritsts who had little to no valid 'hit's'. They're getting dropped faster and there is never room for artistic growth as labels have become more focused on first week sales and a quick cash-in's.

I work for a major label and have seen this happen time and time again.

Hopefully Macy (who I happen to like) finds a deal with a label that celebrates music for music and she can go on making great albums without the pressure of having to make #1 hits and selling half a million first week.

As for Britney....well...Jive did the same with the Backstreet Boys 2 years ago when they put a hits collection out at the time of their downfall. Could Britney be next????? Sure looks like it!

I dont understand it really.. She really doesnt have that much hits, and in my opinion she doesnt have that many albums (3).

The tracklisting isnt her best.. I dont even think she has that many hits. If anything, it should be "best of" and have the radio played songs with her better part of her albums.. I honestly dont think this is any relation to the tracklisting she has...

If discovering her music.. her first 2 albums are excellent.. The Id is my favorite.. its like a psychodelic rush from start to finish.. hell, I even enjoy the explosion of the speakers at the end.. Thats my macy masterpeice.. her other albums are not too far behind either..

Her voice isnt my favorite.. But I enjoy it and I think the delicate crafts of her music and sounds, with the trippy lyrics makes it both enjoyable and interesting. Its an aquired taste, but Macy needs to be very edgy, and The Id is to me.. lyrically and musically

I will say Demons is a nice addition to the album, a MUST for any macy fan.. its awsme

and If anyone didnt know, BECK is on the It Aint The Money.. backing vocals and he sings a few lines.. very cool

Actually only three, and two flopped (one flopped hard, one was just a dissapointment). She's done decent collborations with other artists but they don't seem appear on there. Oh well. I guess the album is a little hard to take seriously.

Still, even a "very best of" album or cd has always implied that the artist has contributed a substantial amount of "hits"... I've always considered a 'best of' album the same as a GH.. no?

Either way... it's not merited. confused
