I loved K-Ci's voice back in the early 90's. Not enough to copy it like Sisqo and others, but I dug his feeling. So powerful, and always on the mark. I've heard some negative rumblings about their live shows in the past couple of years.
I know some vocalists feel like cigarettes give their voice an "edge", but in the end, tobacco is just like all the rest. It ruins you.

No, they just performed for the Sky Show. To me, K-Ci has always had that raspy and raw tone to his voice and IMO it has gotten better with his age; however, JoJo sounded a perfect mess! Remember how he used to sing high tenor back in the day? NOT ANYMORE! He sounds like an old beat up Lincoln Continental trying to start up. Off key, out of breath, even struggling with his low notes. It was terrible.

ya know, I used to laugh at these guys. They always reminded me of a cracked out Sephus and Reecey(In LivingColor). Especially when K-Ci would take his shirt off and hop around and"whoooo yeah" and what not. In fact I taped a couple of performances and drove my wife crazy by rewinding them over and over. I heard the last couple of guitar notes from the show this morning, then Tom came on and had a hard time getting the crowd hyped again. Was it really that bad?

I'm not a huge fan of Kci and Jojo's music as a duo although I bought the last CD for their song "It's Me" which was funky and I loved the beat etc. I honestly don't expect them to get back together as I believe specifically "Devante'" has his own demons to battle. I felt so bad after seeing him on the 1st BET awards, he was gone, he looked like he was out of it and not to mention his appearance...the guy was already skinny, he could'nt afford to lose anymore weight. I saw a documentary on Missy Elliott and she along with Tweet, Ginuwine, Timbaland etc. all left him with ill feelings. He had all this talent he wanted to introduce to the world and he screwed it up. Can you even imagine the amount of money he would have received from all of these artist??? I just read an article recently about Devante' and they said he was a hermit/recluse etc. I'll post it if I can find it online.

It really was. You should've heard it. It was pitiful. I knew he's passed out on several occasions due to alcohol and they've been forced to cancel shows, but after hearing him this morning you could tell the brother is a complete wreck. It's no point in him or Jodeci getting back together if he sounds like this. All I could think of was Paul Williams from The Temptations. disbelief

Like I said, K-Ci has pretty much always had that loud and raspy voice and actually sounded like himself, but JoJo was just a major disappointment. I have never heard anything so flat since Chaka came out singing "Through The Fire" on this years VMAs...WAY OFF!!!! Dudes speech was even slurred significantly.

I found it (no I did'nt write the article, I came across it by chance months ago)

As a personality who exemplifies the failed promise of the New Jack/Hip-Hop generation...
I have long been intrigued by continuing the story of this obivously conflicted individual...

As I sit here listening to one of my favorite R&B albums, The Show The After Party The Hotel...I felt sadness for a talent that may never realize its potential....

Thanks to two articles in Vibe magazine (when they still wrote articles) I have pieced together the story of a troubled but abundantly talented cat....

My guess is that Donald DeGrate has never been satisfied with who he is (Virgos are never satisfied-see MIchael Jackson)....

he experienced the trauma that many children suffer when raised in strict religious households...and so like so many of those children he reacted to being stifled by rebelling....

During the time he spent in the church, he learned to play piano with prodigious talent...he began wrirting songs as a teenager...he formed Jodeci with the singing Hailey brothers whom he knew from the gospel circuit...

Jodeci-Jo(for Jo-Jo) De(for DeVante) Ci(for K-Ci)...Joel, Donald, and Cedric respectively took on new monikers similar to the hip-hop cats they listened to...Donald's transformation was a bit more dramatic...

Cedric and Joel were already stars as Lil' Cedric and the Hailey Brothers but it was clear that Jodeci was Donald's vision....

Donald became DeVante Swing...a name that conjures up images of an uber-suave Black ladies man...

DeVante claims that he and younger brother Dalvin fought, drank, smoked weed, had lots of sex, and carried guns during their adolescence...a claim that may have seeds of truth but likely are somewhat exaggerated...

Donald/DeVante wanted to be an R&B star so badly that he and the Haileys with Dalvin tagging along for the ride, drove to New York to seek a deal with Uptown/MCA records, at that time the leading label for a new kind of hip-hop infused R&B music known as New Jack Swing...

They showed up unannounced at the offices of Uptown with nothing but their homemade 29 song demo...they were of course confined to the lobby indefintiely until a sympathetic Heavy D gave them a listen....

Heavy D got them into the offices and the then new president of A&R, Sean "Puffy" Combs took over from that point....

Puffy saw four unpolished country bumpkins and sought to transform them in to New York urban prototypes...a change of image that was in concert with DeVante's vision...

Puff bought them new wardrobes that reflected the fashion of the New York hip-hop culture and set them up with an apartment in the projects...He brought in R&B superstar Al B. Sure to develop the music on the demo into what would become Jodeci's 1991 New jack Classic debut Forever My Lady...

The first side consisted of strong ballads produced by Al and DeVante and the second side was made up of cliched overproduced New Jack dance trax done by DeVante alone....

DeVante wrote songs of pain, longing, and loneliness that defy his claim that he'd never had his heart broken by a woman...

Things changed for Jodeci when Puffy was fired by Uptown president Andre Harrell...DeVante took the reigns for his group...

he chose to make the group appear even more street this time around...The follow up album Diary of A Mad Band shows the group with scowling faces and numerous tattoos...

the music was undeniably much funkier than the first effort...but alongside the romance were profanity laced, callous demands for sex and adolescent macho posturing...

without the guiding force of Puffy behind them, the album, while still attaining platinum status, did little to increase their visiblilty...

The third album was entitled The Show The After Party The Hotel which gave insight on the group's jaded view of their new found celebrity...

The album is proof posititve that DeVante is a musical genius...the thick liquid (real!)basslines, phased guitars, stomping keyboards and crunching drums make for a new funk celebration...

the album is a triumph and a let down at once...the very few lyrics about romance feel insincere buried underneath the pornographic sex, contempt for women, and obnoxiousness that drag this album down into the depths of ignorance...

what was going on behind the scenes was even more sad...

DeVante in his quest to shed his old identity and step into a new one, had become a meglomanical tyrant....

before the release of the Mad Band album, DeVante's hard facade was shattered when his home was invaded while he slept...the burgulars tied him up and assaulted him...pistol whipping him and stealing thousands of dollars worth of jewelry....

He reacted by becoming extremely paranoid and carrying a gun with him at all times...

an incident at his home involving K-Ci and himself threatening women with guns and sexually assaulting them was swept under the rug....

His claims to never have had a broken heart had to be questioned considering that his Southern Preacher father and his mother refused to listen to his music (secular music was banned in the DeGrate household)....

there are rumours that DeVante was humiliated by his father in church by making him stand before the congregation shirtless to show off his numerous tattoos and chastising him in front of everyone as he stood there...

DeVante sought to cement his postion in the music industry by founding his own label (Swing Mob/Elektra) and signing a handful of young hopefuls...his stable of acts included Sista (a group fuled by the singing/rhyming/songwriting of a young Missy Elliot), future super producer Timbaland, Ginuwine, Playa, and Suga (another female singing group, one of the members, Tweet, would go on to a solo career)...

Though no one has gone into explicit detail on the record, the story is that DeVante treated his protegees horribly....making them work extreme hours, not paying them, and being mentally, verbally, and physically abusive...

It is rumored that DeVante was known to pull his gun on his artists...Ginuwine recalls an incident where DeVante was waiting for him backstage with a gun...

perhaps this behavior was due to DeVante's alliance with the Death Row label head Suge Knight, who was notorious for his harsh treatment of his artists...

It would appear that in hooking up with Suge that DeVante was looking for not only street cred but a father figure...which was demonstrated by his dependence on Puffy and Al B. Sure in the earlier days of the group...

Elektra quietly dropped the Swing Mob label just before the scheduled release of Sista's debut album (this is a shame because 4 All The Sistas Around The World was one of the best R&B albums recorded in the 90's)...

At this point, DeVante was a heavy weed smoker with even more problems ahead of him...after his label was dropped, all of his artists abandoned him...he was the forced to file bankruptcy for his failure to pay for the 13 cars he was leasing...

Jodeci slowly disintegrated...K-Ci and Jo-Jo recorded what was originally thought to be a one-off duo project while Jodeci took a hiatus...

the hiatus never ended...

Jodeci appeared together at the first annual BET awards to announce a reunion...DeVante's fraile appearance and dazed behavior sent rumors flying through the industry concerning his health and state of mind...Songs were recorded but the reunion never came to fruition...

the unoffical story is that DeVante is now a hermit who is struggling with a serious cocaine addiction...

only time will tell if DeVante can overcome his demons and return to making music that will fulfill the promise of his talent...

one could surmise that DeVante was a misguided young man who let the anger and pain of his childhood lead him into a quest for a new identity that would allow him to leave his past behind and be a person who controls every aspect of his life so that he coud never be victimized again...

the nature of show business attracts these types and lures them into the darker side of its reality leaving them worse off than when they started...

As I sit here listening to the acoustic guitars that float beneath Freek n You, a soulful composition doomed by its ignorant subject matter, I wonder....

Will DeVante be another casualty of celebrity?

Some of my cousins, who live in Charlotte, recall an incident of Jodeci attending the DeGrate church and bringing the house down with a number of gospel songs. Afterwards, as soon as they got in the church parking lot, they fired up the wacky tobacci. What a shame. disbelief

ReturnOfDOOK

I'm a HUGE Jodeci fan (as my avatar shows) and all I want is another taste of the new jack swing! Man, when those guys are together, it's amazing the music they can throw down! Silky slow jams, fun party jams, and dirty / girl-let's-do-it-right-here-in-da-damn-phonebooth songs.... Every year there's rumors of "a new Jodeci album by years end" or "they already have 10 tracks complete"....drives me nuts!
