Afro-Cuban Jazz: Got Some Recommendations 2 Give?

I was listening to the "South of the Border: The Verve Latin-Jazz Sides" by Charlie Parker & "Afro Cuban Jazz Moods" by Dizzy Gillespie the other night and I thought I was missing out on something since I'm not really that HEAVY into Afro-Cuban Jazz music, not that I don't like it, but its just so lush I don't really know what to start with.

Don't get me wrong tho, I LOVE Celia Cruz, Tito Puente, Luis Prima & Machito but like I said, that genre is so lush its hard for one to decide what to start with.

So,,,I'm thinking that you guys would recommend a lil' sumthin' sumthin' for me. I'm bored with what I'm hearing right now, I want some new shit that didn't get played in my stereo b4 music

yeah.... the afro-cuban allstars are a great place to start. they feature a lot of the contemporary greats. The album "A toda Cuba le Gusta" is really good.

Also:
Compay Seguno
Ruben Gonzales (i like "Calle Salud")
Ibrahem Ferrer
Omara Portuonda (they all have relatively recent new albums out that are good).
Change it one more time..

The Afro Cuban All Stars is a multi-generational big band which was formed by Juan de Marcos Gonzalez to showcase the diversity of Cuban music.

Basically paying tribute to the Cuban musical contribution to the Afro-Cuban-Jazz triad.

If you want the REAL DEAL/Hardcore shit, then don't mess around and go straight for the cream of the crop...The BEST Afro-Cuban Jazz is from CUBA....I highly recommend you check these cd's out:

If John Coltrane/Jimi Hendrix/Charlie Parker were Cuban and played the piano, they would be Chucho Valdes, the guy is outta this world. The level of musicianship in Cuba RIGHT NOW is crazy and it's a damn shame that these people don't get the recognition or money that musicians of these caliber deserve. If you are looking for HARDCORE, Cuban Jazz then get the first 2 cd's I put up there. Maraca is also great but it also has more of a "dance" flavor to it. All 3 cd's are well worth your money. By the way, I'm not saying all the other recommendations aren't good. I'm sure they are...I just think the artists I'm recommending are the real deal, the cream of the crop. Trust me on this one wink

For some reason your 1st two graphics aren't showing for me.
(Chucho Valdez & Irakere)

What is your opinion of Juan de Marcos Gonzalez's projects?
(The Buena Vista Social Club, Afro Cuban All Stars)
Any historical value there?

The Audience, what' s up man? I've read some of your post and you definitely know music. Well, IMO both Buena Vista and Afro Cuban All Stars are very talented groups that make GREAT music...now that being said, that music is more of a "novelty" in the sense that after the success of Buena Vista, a bunch of "spin-off" projects came about to capitalize on the "tourist" market that wanted this. The music is great but it's not really jazz...If you listen to the "Yemaya" album you'll see what I mean. These guys are all about taking Cuban music and exploding it into the stratosphere. It's jazz on steroids. You gotta hear it to understand what I'm saying....it's kinda hard to explain. If you haven't heard it then it may be like nothing you have heard.

Hey emilio319.

Thanks for the insight and suggestions.
I'm not deeply familiar with the history of this music and you sounded like you knew.

Keep 'em comin'. thumbs up!
