Janet's Damita Jo-- Like It Or Not?

I kind of liked the album. My favorite songs on this album is Sexhibition, Spending Time With You, Island Life, All Nite (Don't Stop), R&B Junkie, Thinkin' Bout My Ex, and Warmth/Moist. I thought the album was a little too x-rated influenced, but overall it's a diverse and creative album. But I think The Velvet Rope was, and still is her greatest achievement and it's truly an album I can listen straight through. So, what do you think about Damita Jo?

I dont mind it, but janet put on your clothes honey, you're mature now, Britney and Christina r the only ones who do that crap. 3 of Janet's album covers feature her naked on the front (Janet, All for you and Damita Jo)

It hasn't been good for our older pop icon women such as Janet, Madonna (American Life flopped but successful tour) and Kylie's Body Language.

i think damita jo is one of janet's strongest cds. i like it more than control, rhythm nation, all for you and janet. velvet rope is just few steps ahead of this record and, in my opinion, that is only because of the honesty on that record. i really don't think there is one song providing filler on damita jo and, for once, the interludes don't eventually annoy me. i know a lot of people take issue with the fact that this record is not new territory and that is a valid opinion, i suppose. this is what janet does, though, and i don't know why it is a problem for her to do what she does. when was the last "breakthough" prince record...something of new substance? outside of trc, there hasn't been anything "new" in years....just prince doing his thing. yet, here we are...all owners of musicology (in one form or another), talking about him on a website about him.

oops, now i've gone off on a mini ramble...sorry. i guess my personal opinion is that many people who "dislik" the new record have decided that based on a lot of bad press. i'm not saying everyone...just a lot of people. the critics, the general public...they formed opinions about this record well before it was released. some of the people here formed opinions before they even heard the first single...i guess if you don't want to like something, you won't like it.

personally, i love me some damita jo!

With a little perspective, I'm able to judge the album more concretely. It's a lot of hit and miss. The good songs are REALLY good and there are some tracks that are mediocre, and some that could've been left off (namely Warmth, Truly, and Thinkin' 'Bout My Ex). It didn't top TVR, but it's more consistent and listenable than AFY and janet. (Yes, I enjoyed this record more than '93's janet.) With that said, there hasn't been a week since March 30 that I haven't played the album. I noticed I mainly skip the interludes, but I enjoy most of the tracks.

The first half

Winners: Strawberry Bounce, Spending Time With You, All Nite (Don't Stop), R&B Junkie

The latter half

Winners: I Want You, Like You Don't Love Me, Moist, SloLove, Just A Little While

Notes

Dear g*d, if I didn't play "All Nite (Don't Stop)" to death this year!!! DAMN... I had (and still having) a lot of fun with this song this year. She killed me with this sh*t. The first time I heard it at the club it was ecstacy. I've played it on my iTunes over 5,000 times HAHA! Yeahhhh! This probably will win "Song of the Year" in my personal "Best of" lists. AND IF THE MIXES TO THIS SONG DIDN'T BREATHE NEW LIFE INTO MY BODY (Sander Kleinenberg Everybody Mix, Elephant Man Mix, Chad Jack Mix, Low End Mix, life! life! life! life!) It's up there amongst the best she's ever made.

"I Want You": I was JAMMIN' to this song all spring. I love the classic sparkle it has and Janet's vocals. The rhythm is great. Kanye did a good job on it. Great love song.

"Just A Little While": This was one of those tracks that didn't click with me when it first came out, but after around mid-summer I really started getting into it and now it's one of the tracks I return to the most off the LP. I AM STILL IN LOVE WITH THE PETER RAUHOFER REMIX OF THIS SONG. I still play that faithfully and I love the Nu Soul Club mix. I love singing this song!

"Like You Don't Love Me" is my personal favorite from the album. It's that sleeper song that you don't expect to grab you, but when it does you can't get it out your head. I love the lyrics and the groove. Another track I had a lot of fun with.

"Moist" feel the rain come, pourin', soakin'... baby, ooh! DAMN, I love this song, TOO!! Yessss. This is my late night song. I have some memories with this track. wink LMAO!!!!! LMAO!!!!! LMAO!!!!

"SloLove" g*ddamnit I love this f***g song. This song kills me so much. The groove is so light and magnetic and I love the electronic elements in it. This song reminds me of my senior year of college and how exciting it was. This song has personal significance with me and I adore it.

"R&B Junkie" is great song. I love doing the electric slide to it at parties. I feel like bumpin' 2 sum ol' skool ::dips to the ground:: HAHAH!!!

I've really gotten into the non-album tracks as of late like "Could This Be Love," "Love Me (Just Blaze Remix)" and "Put Your Hands On."

Overall, I HAD A LOT OF FUN WITH THIS ALBUM and was very satisfied.

Janet album ranking:
1. Janet Jackson's Rhythm Nation 1814
2. The Velvet Rope
3. Control
4. Damita Jo
5. janet.
6. All For You
7. Janet Jackson
8. Dream Street

I love Damita Jo, too. The Velvet Rope is Janet's masterpiece, but DJ is still a work of art. smile My favorite song off DJ is Island Life. I just can't get enough of it. And really, the Janet's strong interest in sex doesn't bother me at all. I say, more power to Ms. Janet for showing that having good sex isn't only for 20 year-olds. And anyway, not every single song is blatantly sexual: most of the songs are about being in love. On a side note, I read in an interview with Jimmy Jam that Damita Jo is Janet's version of Prince's Dirty Mind. I just thought that was interesting.

uh oh...now you've done it. a bunch of people will now come out of the woodwork to say what a blasphemous claim that is and how janet is a no talent so and so who should never be compared to prince. blah, blah, blah.

personally, i don't see the connection to dirty mind and, considering it is not new territory for janet (whereas dirty mind was very new territory for prince) i don't get the comparison. regardless, i hope ol' girl tours for this in a few months!!

Oops, my mistake. eek In my defense, I didn't compare DJ to Prince's Dirty Mind; that was Jimmy Jam's comparison. biggrin Anyway, I sure hope Janet tours, too.

I could have sworn that I saw an interview in which Jimmy Jam said the same thing.
I know for sure that I didn't read an article on MTV news 'coz I rarely even go to that site or watch the channel anymore.

Well, whoever said it, I still Love Damita Jo and can't wait for the tour!

Best songs:

All Nite (Don't Stop)
R&B Junkie
Put Your Hands On
dancing jig

The rest is so so. Was a disappointment at first. Starting to like "I Want You". It's growing on me I guess.

I really like it. It attempts a lot of styles and while only a few of the songs really are excellent (IMHO, "Slo Love", "All Nite", "Damita Jo", "Like You Don't Love Me") when it stumbles ("Island Life", "My Baby") it's isn't that terrible. If you don't own it yet, go all out and get the Japanese editon. "Put Your Hands On" will help you appercaite the album more. They should have also released the "Just A Little While" remix on there as well.

"Love Me (Just Blaze)" is FIYAH. I love that track. I wish it was on the album as well. Maybe the rumoured re-release?
