You must add more Lenny.
You can't have a black rock compilation without Mr. Cab Driver. music "Let me in!" music

Also, the music from Are You Gonna Go My Way is kick-ass. It never gets old.

From the new Baptism album, I'm really diggin SistaMamaLover ... which to me has a Sly stone-rock feel and the slow What Did I Do With My Life.

Also like Other Side...

I could go on because that entire album is awesome. But i'll stop here. The only song on it I don't really like is Storm.

OK, I'm gonna throw this out there to see if anyone remembers the name of this band. This goes all back to the early/mid '80's....There was once an all-Black (pre-Ice-T's band) Heavy Metal group whose name has escaped me all these years. I believe they were out of Los Angeles and they had a video that they would play on the local music video show. The name of the song was called "Rock Without the Roll"

Anyone remember this band from the 80's? If so, what in the world was the name of that band?

Either way it was a baaaaad jam back in the day....(At least according to the ears of an earty teenager at the time).

If you can find that tune, that would be a good one to put on your next compilation.

And since I can see you are a 24-7 Spyz fan, don't forget there last album they put out entitled "6". ("Spyz In Da House is a jammy jam) as well as most of the stuff off "Strength In Numbers"

Also "Flying", "Holy Roller" off of Living Colour's latest - Collideoscope

As well as "Swim", "Servitude", "Properties of Propaganda", "The Warmth of Breath" off of Fishbone's "Give a Monkey A Brain..." and "Fight the Youth" and "So Many Millions" from their "Reality of My Surroundings" joint. And don't forget their classic cover of "Freddies's Dead"

And last but not least, don't sleep on Jean-Paul Bourelly....His tribute to Hendrix is the bomb!! He rips up "Machine Gun", "Straight Ahead" and "Electric Ladyland"

Ok..I've probably said too much....

What's the criteria for black rock? If just the vocalist is black does that count? In addition to King's X, Pook already mentioned Sevendust and then there's Candiria also. All have singers of color, but are they "black rock"?

The bonus track at the end of the Res album is pretty good. Lots of guitar.

So I guess we have to add Hootie and the Blowfish too then. lol

Ugh, Darius may be black, but the music is so not rock.

That actually reminds me of a few similar-sounding soft-rock black artists. Anyone remember Blessid Union Of Souls? How about Dakota Moon?

I thought about that.I consider "black rock" to be performed by,at least, a majority of Black musicians.I guess that's why I have been a little reluctant about Thin Lizzy.I also think it's a style that Black artists have that distinguishes the sound from White artists. Both can do each other's thing, but I think brothas add a little extra funk flavor or gospel or whatever to their music. It's all in the angle.

I have considered a Res song and if I could find my Candiria cd they would already have been represented.I know the general area where it is.I also have been considering Mazarati and Xavion if I can get the tape transferred to mp3 form. The Time should be represented, also and the Isleys. This is why this will go ona while.I may end up with 6 or 7 discs. It will be cool, though.I have given copies to a couple of people who have never heard any of this before except "cult of personality" and the response has been positive.Which makes me wonder why no professional record company has put out a series like this a la the old school funk cd's.It would bring much needed attention to this music and these artists. There may be other brothers out there like me who thought they were "the only ones".

Tracks from Jesse Johnson's 'Bare My Naked Soul' album should be included. I particularly loved his song "Everybody Needs A Dream" which was the b-side to his single "My Life".

Roachford would also be a good choice for the comp.

Damn,I didn't know Jesse had a single from that album. And he had a b-side??Damn!I gotta look for that, too.

Dakota Moon lead vocalist, Ty Taylor was my roommate freshman year in college. His major was musical theater I believe.

Here are some of the bands in my collection. In parentheses are the Anglo bands that they somewhat resemble.

Aterciopelados (PJ Harvey)
Cafe Tacuba (Radiohead)
La Ley (U2)
Juana Molina (Bjork)
Kinky (Chemical Brothers)
Icaro Azul (Siouxsie And The Banshees)
Julieta Venegas (Cat Power)
Puya (Korn)
El Gran Silencio (Public Enemy, Fishbone)

Now, keep in mind I'm doing these artists a great disservice by reducing them to Latin versions of Anglo bands. They are so much more than that and often times the resemblance to the bands I named may be minimal at best. But most people need some point of reference before jumping head first into this type of music if they've never heard it before. Of all of them, Aterciopelados are my favorite.

Telemundo's sister station, mun2 used to have an excellent show called Planeta Rock, but sadly it is no longer on the air. I currently listen to the Rock en Español channel on the Music Choice cable channels. If your cable provider carries Music Choice then I recommend giving that channel a listen.
