Does your taste in music shift with the seasons?

My musical taste vary with the seasons and they tend to stay the same for that whole season. hmm

In spring I tend to listen to a lot of traditional earthy music

  • Classical

  • Folk

  • Jazz

Then when summer hits my tastes seem to get a bit more aggressive. nod I find myself listening to a lot of:

  • Funk

  • Hip-Hop

  • Punk/Rock

  • World music-Reggae, Afrobeat, ect….

Come Fall I mellow out a bit and I seem to be diggin the earthy stuff again with the lastest chill cd that happens to come out at the time. (Jill Scott at the moment smile )

Finally when winter hits! It’s all about electronica! Whether it’s ambient, trip hop, Illbient, experimental, house or Advant garde! That’s the only genre on my playlist.

What about you?!? hmm

My music tastes seem to switch every one to two weeks. For awhile I'm listening to nu metal, then a week or two later it's R.E.M. & David Bowie, then for a couple weeks it's Lauryn Hill, Erika Badu, Mobb Deep, Etc., then maybe classic rock for a week, maybe some pop for a day or two, and then the cycle starts over again. I thought I was weird for changing so much, what do you think? I guess I just like a huge variety of music.

Another excellent question. I'll try to cover this by calendar year:

Jan.-Mar.: I tend to go for a lot of "hard-bop" jazz, east coast hip-hop, and rock music, to keep the spirits up to combat the winter blahs and post-holiday letdown. Typical artists: Art Blakey, Horace Silver, Raekwon, Steely Dan, Miles Davis, MF Doom, etc.

Apr.-Jun.: I listen to a lot of old school soul and r&b, some jazzy hip-hop, and neo-soul. Also a lot of nu jazz/ambient/electronica. Typical artists: Earth, Wind & Fire, Shuggie Otis, Jamiroquai, jazzanova, Om Lounge, Dwele, Maxwell, Badu, etc.

Jun.-Sept.: A lot of the newer releases of the year I've slept on, plus melodic be-bop/"cool" jazz, some hip-hop and R&B. Typical artists: John Coltrane, Miles, Downtown Science, Wayne Shorter, Ella Fitzgerald, Stevie Wonder, Beck, Me'Shell, Yesterday's New Quintet, etc.

Oct.-Dec.: My favorite season, the one I associate most with certain artists and music. I love Christmas music (most of it, anyway). But I also like certain songs and albums that I equate with the late fall and holiday season. Included: Digable Planets, Bill Evans, Cannonball Adderley, Al Green, Isley Brothers, Vince Guaraldi Trio, Wynton Marsalis, Motown artists, etc.

Of course, I fall in love with several albums every year and play them throughout the year. Prince is most always in the rotation every season.

yup - summer's more about stuff like deee-lite, daft punk, basement jaxx and happy dancey stuff.

winter's more about listening to swans, nick drake, laurie anderson, this mortal coil, recent bjork stuff - darker, kinda more ponderous stuff.

i guess i dig prince and bowie so much cuz they seem to work in any season.

I'm all over the place really. Just depends on what I feel like.

I like listening to tons of different styles of music, just mostly depends on my mood.

Music is all about mood for me. My moods sometimes change with the seasons.

Winter: I was into a lot of soft, melodic music like Meshell Ndegeocello's "Comfort Woman," Les Nubians "One Step Forward," Sade "Promise" and the Red Hot + Riot comps. Some old school stuff like Pet Shop Boys, Dead Kennedys, Bronski Beat, Vanity 6, Martika, Dusty Springfield, Sterling Void, etc. I was listening to some west coast smobb music for a second (E-40, The Federation, The Click, Suga T, etc.) Lots of compilations. Lots of underground house and hip hop. Some new stuff.

Spring: I was still into slow music. But I was bumpin' Tori Fixx's "Black.Out" like CRAZY. That's the only thing I was listening to for about a month. Then I branched off into my mini-Pet Shop Boys fetish again. The new Janet record came out -- so of course I immersed myself in that for a long time. I started getting into some old school stuff again (Cameo's Word Up LP, Kurtis Blow, Spandau Ballet's "Gold" come to mind).

Summer: I'm usually into more uptempo selections. I was very mainstream this summer. Very trendy. I was partying a lot, so I had a lot of progressive house playing. I started getting into Anastacia's 2nd LP, Madonna's Immaculate Collection was on constant rotation -- and, yes, I was still in my Janet fixation. But then I would have my hip hop weeks and my R&B days. I re-discovered Lost Boyz "Legal Drug Money." Then there were times when all I was listening to at one point was that southern fried rap and crunk music like T.I., Juvenile's Slow Motion, Petey Pablo's Freek-A-Leek, etc.

Fall: The season is approaching. I'm starting to simmer down now. Right now, I'm really listening to a lot of love songs for some reason (maybe I'm in love... maybe not) LOL.. but yeah... LOLLL.

When I'm in a party mood, which is most of the time, I'm into funk and disco. Sometimes I get in another type of party mood and want to hear house and disco. Sometimes I like to party with pop/rock or new wave. When I'm in a horny mood, I'm into slow jams. When I'm mad as hell, I'm into hard rock/heavy metal.

I was listening to Prince's "Automatic" and bumping through Seattle just a few weeks ago with the windows rolled down, but the seasons can change really fast up here. So, I guess I end up listening to slower, moodier, more emotional music from September through February/March. Simple Minds' "New Gold Dream (81-82-83-84)" is my favorite winter album - it makes me happy and sad at the same time. Coldplay is also a big spin for me in the winter, especially "Clocks."

During the summer, I was listening to The Cure a lot, but rather, their more upbeat songs like "Why Can't I Be You?," "Let's Go to Bed" and "Just Like Heaven." I was playing Duran Duran to get ready for the release of their new album (that's happening in a few weeks now, I might add). I played them when I was going to Seattle for the Prince concert, and it just had the right party vibe.

I notice my music tastes can change from day to night, too. During the day, I like fast, energetic music that gets me in the mood for class or when I have to deal with certain people. However, at night, I always grab the "New Gold Dream" album or put on the live Paris mp3 of the title song, which is absolutely beautiful.
