How many people actually like Madonna's 1989 classic, Like A Prayer?

To be honest with u, I think that Like A Prayer is Maddy's crowning achievement. When I bought that album back in 1999, after I bought The Immaculate Collection, all I heard was brilliance. My favorite tracks from that whole album is Like A Prayer, Cherish, Dear Jessie, Express Yourself, and Promise 2 Try. Those are classics. I remember one of my friends having the vinyl version of Maddy's LAP with the oil scented LP packaging and that HIV/AIDS infomation card. It was at the time, the first album to ever have HIV/Aids awareness info. But lets get back 2 the album. This is a classic pop album. It had her incorporate a lot of musical elements including pop, rock, and especially dance. It was her most far-reaching album. What do you think about it?

it's not necessarily my favorite at this point, but it's certainly one of the best. possibly THE best, yes.

Dear Jessie really drags it down for me. and Love Song is surprisingly lackluster. Promise To Try hasn't aged well either (but that could be the shameless/corny way it was used in Truth Or Dare, that makes me want to shun it).

Yeah... really like this album. Probably up there in my fave albums list, and I'm not a Madonna fan by any stretch of the imagination.

Like a Prayer has great songs: Like a Prayer, Til Death do us part (the perfect pop track), & Dear Jessie, are just a few.

The other thing that makes this album (for me) is the musicianship on it - esp. the drumming on Like a Prayer, Til death etc... love it!

This is THE madonna album.
People rave about Ray of Light and as much as i like it, it's nothing on Like a Prayer.

This is the most confessional Madonna album dealing with issues of prayer, women's rights, her divorce, mother's death, family, child abuse etc.

Promise to Try gives me chills to this day, the lyrics are so honest and deep.

I don't mind Love Song but it's too repetitive for my tastes.

I still don't get "WHAT DO YOU MEAN IT'S NOT IN THE COMPUTER" on the last track.....

Yeah, this was definitely her biggest artistic achievement. nod Also, that song she did with Prince was pretty cool too.

I still believe that Prince wrote the title track. I don't have any proof, but I believed it before finding out that Prince had recorded his own version.

Like A Prayer is probably her best album, but Like a Virgin is on it close, so is True Blue. They all have their faults.

I never really thought any of her albums were four star quality 2 me.

Love Song is repettitive yes, but I dont care i still love it and had edited the song just 2 keep up with it 4 myself lol!

Madonna wouldn't claim it as her own if she hadn't written it. Bjork, Lenny Kravitz, BabyFace, Steven Sodehiem, David Foster, Andrew Llyod Weber, Time Rice, Tim Elliott all get credit for the songs they wrote.... Why wouldn't Prince? At the time he was as big as star as she was.

It's my favorite Madonna album. I bought it only because there was a Prince song on it, and then I came to love it all. A pop masterpiece.

I also like her 1992 underrated album, Erotica and her second best album, Ray Of Light. My personal favorites from Ray Of Light is Frozen, Candy Perfume Girl, Nothing Really Matters, The Power Of Goodbye, & the title track, Ray Of Light. I think that Ray Of Light is her best album of the 90's, wouldn't you agree?

Well, I guess I should say those are the only two I own, because they don't get any rotation in my stereo. I couldn't tell you the last time I've played a Madonna song. lol

'Like A Prayer' is Madonna's first real masterpiece. With this album, she proved that she is a serious artist capable of writing and singing serious songs. It's a very personal, confessional album with strong, introspective songs that are miles away from the bubblegum pop hits that she was doing just a few years earlier. The highlights are plentiful....there's the ecstatic,gospel-flavored title track, which is one of the best pop songs of the 80s,period.There's "Til Death Do Us Part",which is just perfect. There's the undeniably catchy, upbeat "Cherish".There's a couple of top-notch dance tracks ("Express Yourself" and "Keep It Together"),both of which are well-written.There's the psychedelic, eclectic "Dear Jessie",which has become a fan favorite. There's even a duet with Prince on "Love Song".Although this track is annoyingly repetitive,it has a certain charm to it and their voices blend well together.

It's a shame that the Grammy voters didn't give Madonna the awards she deserved for this album. The title track should have been nominated for "Song of the Year" and the album should have at least received a nod for "Album Of the Year".By the time they finally awarded her with four Grammys for 'Ray Of Light' in 1999,she had already established herself as a highly creative, serious artist ten years earlier.

David,

As you know (if not you know now), i'm not a Madonna fan but I am a musician fan.
Therefore the drummer question piqued my curiosity. The drummers on the record are nothing less than stellar.

Jonathan "Sugarfoot" Moffett:
Too many name tours and recordings to list.
http://www.jonathanmoffett.com

Jeff Porcaro:
Another 1st call session drummer.
http://www.frontiernet.ne...tracks.htm
Generally known for his work with Toto.
Died August 5,1992 of a heart attack

John "JR" Robinson:
Has supposedly eclipsed Hal Blaine as "the most recorded drummer in history".
http://www.johnjrrobinson.com/

I'm impressed. wink

One of the bass players on this record is none other than Randy "American Idol" Jackson.

It's definitely one of my favorites of hers, if not the favorite.

Not just because of the fact Prince is on it. I remember when Like A Prayer (the cassette single) first came out, I played that song over and over and just about wore about my tape.

Still in my collection-worth a listen every once in a while. Not in my top list of albums by any means, but I still dig it.

It's a shame that Warners hasn't already remastered this great album.I know of at least five bonus tracks that could be included,so that the tracklist would look like this...

Madonna 'Like A Prayer' (remastered)

"Like A Prayer"
"Express Yourself"
"Love Song"
"Til Death Do Us Part"
"Promise To Try"
"Cherish"
"Dear Jessie"
"Oh Father"
"Keep It Together"
"Pray For Spanish Eyes"
"Act Of Contrition"
"Possessive Love" (previously unreleased )
"Love Attack" (previously unreleased)
"First Is A Kiss" (previously unreleased)
"Supernatural" (previously issued as a B-side only)
"Just A Dream" (previously unreleased)

lol now what Madonna fan wouldn't go crazy over that??
