Johnny Ramone, of 'The Ramones,' Dies at 55

Johnny Ramone, of 'The Ramones,' Dies at 55

LOS ANGELES - Johnny Ramone, guitarist and co-founder of the seminal punk band "The Ramones," has died. He was 55.
Ramone died in his sleep Wednesday afternoon at his Los Angeles home surrounded by friends and family, his publicist said. He had battled prostate cancer for five years, and was hospitalized in June at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center.

Ramone, born John Cummings, was one of the original members of the Ramones, whose hit songs "I Wanna be sedated" and "Blitzkrieg Bop," among others, earned the band induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2002.

The band's singer, Joey Ramone, whose real name was Jeff Hyman, died in 2001 of lymphatic cancer. Bassist Dee Dee Ramone, who was born Douglas Colvin, died from a drug overdose in 2002.

Johnny Ramone founded "The Ramones" in 1974 with Joey Ramone, DeeDee Ramone and Tommy Ramone, the only surviving member of the original band.

A tribute concert and cancer research fund-raiser was held Sunday in Los Angeles to celebrate the band's 30th anniversary. It featured performances by Los Angeles punk band X, the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Henry Rollins and others.

Along with his wife, Linda Cummings, Johnny Ramone was surrounded at his death by friends Eddie and Jill Vedder, and Rob and Sherrie Zombie. Other friends who gathered at his Los Angeles home included Lisa Marie Presley, Pete Yorn, Vincent Gallo and Talia Shire.

They sure weren't a very healthy bunch.

This is unfortunate, so not to take away from it, but for a second I thought I was going crazy. I am only a casual Ramones fan, and didn't realize they all were actually named Ramone, so I was thinking to myself reading the first part of this story "I could have sworn this guy already died a couple times, what the hell is going on?"

SO sad! A great band, who influenced sooooo many different acts from different genres of music. Now, only Tommy is left (crap, I'd be sweating if I were him right now).

"Hey Ho! Let's GO!!!"

R.I.P. Johhny! The Ramones are rockin' in Heaven!

i'm always surprised at how many people STILL think of the ramones as this "weird", super-mega-hardcore punk band. to me, they're as rock'n'roll as bill haley & the comets and as important as the beatles or elvis to the history of pop music. they were just a good rock band with a good gimmick and a lead singer who started out wanting to sing like ronnie spector. it's sad and a bit odd to think of the ramones as being mostly dead.

Yeah, I heard yesterday. Man, 55, that's young. He was always my favorite in the band. I dug The Ramones. I first really got hip to them when I went to go see "Rock And Roll High School" when I was a kid. Love that movie. From there, I bought a few of their albums over the years. I liked what they stood for, and their songs were cool. Short and sweet. Their first album is a classic.

The Punk community is gonna miss you, dude. sad

But thanks so much for inventing the genre and starting a music and cultural revolution. Without it, I'd be stuck with the likes of Emerson, Lake, and Palmer.

Did anyone hear Tommy Ramone on Howard Stern this morning? I'm surprised Marky didn't call in too.

Also - Howard said that Johnny was shceduled to call in this week because he wanted Howard's show to be his last interview and a chance to say goodbye to the fans.

So sad sad
