I also prefer Stacy Lattisaw's 1981 cover of "Love On A Two-Way Street" mainly because the original version by the Moments sounds as if it was recorded in a basement...lol...actually,their version is also a remake, the song was first done by a woman whose name I can't recall.

jacktheimprovident said: I usually don't like covers, and I never feel a cover should replace the original whether it improves it or not, but even a stickler for originality like to me has to admitt when a cover version is better than the original (or at least as good) Here's a few of my picks
Gotta Get You Into My Life (Earth Wind and Fire, The Beatles) Night On the WatchTower (Hendrix, Dylan) Respect (Aretha, Otis Redding) Shake Rattle and Roll (Bill Haley, Big Joe Turner) Hound Dog (Elvis, Big Mama Thorton) Feel free to include rap covers, even though I despise them in principle Night On the WatchTower (Hendrix, Dylan) ] dont u mean all along the watchtower

blackguitaristz said "Heard It Through The Grapevine" Roger covering Marvin Gaye. nope, it was Marvin who already did the cover version, Gladys Knight recorded it already one year EARLIER (1967) anyway I agreee, I also love Rogers version the best! Vanglorious... this is protected by the red, the black, and the green. With a key... sissy!

Stevie Wonder's "We Can Work It Out"
Aretha Franklin's "Bridge Over Troubled Water" and "Somwehere" Chaka Khan's "I Feel For You" (not that Prince's was bad, but the 80s pop-locking hip-hop like beat along with Stevie's harmonica solos and samples is far better than the Purple One's) Sly Stone's "Que Sera Sera" Luther Vandross's "A House Is Not A Home" and "Until You Come Back To Me (That's What I'm Gonna Do)" (of course ReRe ripped it, but it was nice to hear Lutha do line of it with a soft orchestra backing him up). D'Angelo's "Cruisin'"

DavidEye said: "MacArthur Park" by Donna Summer (1978) ---it kills the original version!
"Superstar" by Luther Vandross (1983) ---more dramatic than The Carpenter's version. "Got To Get You Into My Life" by Earth Wind and Fire (1978) ---it's hard to top the Beatles, but EW&F pulls it off with ease. You know I'm not sure if the Carpenters orginally did "Superstar". There is a rare early 70s/late 60s album of Cher's that includes the song, which I think predates the Carpenters verison. I would be almost sure that Cher's verison was a cover as well though. The Carpenters certaintly had the biggest hit with it.
