Who is bigger...Elvis or Michael Jackson? Whether you like them or not, the biggest superstars of our lifetime are Elvis Presley and Michael Jackson. My question is, who do you think is bigger?
I think Elvis held that title for years but I think Michael Jackson has passed him. Andy is a four letter word.

Elvis has been alot more documented, when Jacko dies, he proberly will be remembered just as much as Elvis!
The public, just like after Elvis had died, will remember how talented and unique Jacko really was! If only Lisa marie and Mj had a baby.....the relatives etc.....just be awsome! Jacko has also been the longest running mega star ever.....huge when a kid and a phenomenen when an adult.....consistantly famous since about 10 years old! Jacko's career is alot more interesting then Elvis' too! anyway, now it is Elvis, but when jacko dies it will be tough? [Edited 9/14/04 11:29am]

I beg to differ. Most people know an Elvis song (love me tender, teddy bear, all shook up, blue suede shoes - hell I could go on and on, BUT many people have never heard an MJ song. I realize that most people have heard of MJ and they've heard of Thriller, but I believe that most know an Elvis song over an MJ song. Just my opinion.

Elvis has more of him 2 spread around now and days cuz he's not alive like Jimi... He has bunches O albums....
But Michael is still alive. He has albums from childhood to now. I think Mike will surpass Elvis on through time. I already thought he has.... Straight Jacket Funk Affair
Album plays and love for vinyl records.

Can we please stop with the "who is bigger/better?" threads? They really serve no purpose.

Just my opinion. i don't think so. i mean, everyone above about 15 knows an elvis song (and that's a lot of people) but my little cousins (12 years old) have no idea who elvis presley is but they sure do know who mj is. the same for a few friends' kids...they can't name an elvis song but they can, at least, name thriller. all i'm saying is that i've never met or known anyone who DOESN'T know an mj song or who he is. the guys at my work from ecuador don't know elvis but they always call me "michael" because i walk around singing him all the time. yeah, i think mj is more famous (maybe infamous, depending on your view).

While i agree that these comparison threads can be a deathtrap of acrimony and pettiness, which I myself have been experiencing with a certain couple of threads that shall remain nameless, my two cents on this is that Elvis is "bigger" as an icon than MJ, though MJ's current level of popularity is probably higher, if that makes any sense. One thing I will say is that at least MJ writes his own songs, Elvis never wrote a single one of his own songs (he'd been given co-writing credit on a few of them, but those were purely business deals).

MJ for sure. He's much more famous than Elvis or any other person on Earth. More importantly, Jackson has touched every audiences, from every gender to every races, something that Elvis never achieved. He also had the longest career possible to make ( he's had his first #1 at 11 back in 1970).

Michael is bigger,he's more famous.....
Michael Jackson is, quite simply, the most successful entertainer of the 20th century. As a singer, composer, producer, arranger and musician, he's fashioned music that is the embodiment of modern pop and has sold more recordings than any other single artist. His live concerts are presentations of kinetic energy, unbridled emotion and the highest level of showmanship. Unquestionably, he's the King of Pop. Welcome 2 The Dawn!!!!!!!!!

Have to say it:
Elvis, by about 100 pounds. Isn't Elvis the biggest selling solo artist ever? Not for a single record, obviously, but collectively. They're much the same. Electrifying performers who have crossed color and musical boundaries, drug addicts (legal drugs, of course) whose fame seemed to get the better of them and ultimately turned into tragic figures. I think it's pretty obvious that MJ has an Elvis complex--married his daughter, took the "King of..." moniker (Of course Elvis never had to call himself that like Michael did). Michael might become a bigger figure in the end because of the controversy surrounding him, and the fact that he literally does not look like a human being anymore. Check this song out at:

I don't know what world you all live in, but Elvis is the only true King and definitely more popular.
I thought Michael had a chance at surpassing him in the 80's but that FAILED! Elvis is more respected for his place in rock-n-roll, where as Michael will go down in history as the man who may, or may not have molested little boys. POOK is right... my kids are creeped out by him, that's for sure. Lovesexy Funkateer

Because only stodgy old white men like Elvis! speeddemon said: He also had the longest career possible to make ( he's had his first #1 at 11 back in 1970).
Many other artists have had much greater longeivity than Mike (and, as someone pointed out earlier, he hasn't exactly been setting the world on fire with his music in the past 10 years or so). If you want to go by longest span between #1 hits, even Cher beats him.

Well it would be, MJ is a more recent act. The audience that record companies are generally targeting was not alive when Elvis was making music. Come on, don't be silly, in 200 years time, Elvis will still be bigger than MJ, that's not a put-down to MJ, it's just fact.

Because Elvis has. | |

Um, that's probably because Michael is still alive and still making music? That's like saying, "Who's the more famous actress? Reese Witherspoon or Katharine Hepburn?" Reese.....because some kids know who she is.
