Let's talk about Alicia Keys

First of all hello everybody!

I'm a huge Prince fan and I've been lurking this board for a minute. I finally decided to join a few days ago and since I'm also a fan of Alicia Keys, I wanted my first post to be about her.

Ok, I read a lot of things on here about Alicia, and I see that the majority of people on here don't like her. Well if your one of the people that don't really care for Alicia can you please not post in here. I know that this thread won't be totally positive, but I would atleast like it if people that were able to give honest unbiased opinions posted rather than people that will say everything negative because they just can't stand the girl lol. I know that the media makes alot of people feel that way so in some ways it's understandable.

Now I would like for everybody to give their honest opinions on her. If Alicia needs to work on something, then what is it? What direction do you think Alicia should go with music? Do you see any kind of talent in her?

I'm sorta young so I like and appreciate my generation artists. Of course they don't hold a candle to artists like Prince and Stevie but I would like for people to say what artists like Alicia are missing rather that callin them talentedless and overrated.

What do you want to hear from Alicia that will get your respect?

THANKS IN ADVANCE GUYS! THIS IS THE COOLEST MESSAGEBOARD ON THE NET AND YOUR PRINCE FANS, SO OF COURSE YOUR OPINIONS MEAN THE MOST!!!

I for one am a fan of Alicia. Her most recent work, diary is a favorite CD in my collection.
So far, from what I've seen of her, she's doing quite well. I have not seen her live yet, but I'm sure that will change with time. Reading some of the credits in the notes of her CD, she was definetly surrounded by music professionals, DWayne Wiggins just to name one. If there's one lil' bad thing to say about her, in my opinion, I wish she would stop with playing the trendy sound of today, remixing to death, adding guest rappers just to chart, adding samples to her songs, and so on. That's just my small gripe. Overall, I like her over the other ladies she's peers with, Beyonce, Brandy and some others cause she can actually write and compose a song on her own, rather than rely heavily on outsiders to boost her up.

Like Alicia. Just listened to "Songs..." last night. But I'm a little critical of her genius tag considering she is HEAVILY influenced by other people's work. Suffice it to say she seems to pick and choose licks from other people's work at random.

Huh??? Are you one of those people that just couldn't stay away from the thread lol? It's all good. For the most part people don't waste time posting about others that they don't like or don't care for, but since you did then she strikes some kind of nerve with you. Tell me what you think about her music?

Totally understand where your coming from and the media messes artists up with these silly lables. Is there any particular direction that you would rather see her go in?

Thank you! I love all of them. Beyonce and especially Brandy are my other favorites. Beyoce writes and Brandy does vocal arrangements but it's always a little more interesting for me to talk about Alicia since she's more hands-on everything. Thanks again.

I think her direction is pretty on point. I would prefer more live drums. I LOVE "Nobody Not Really", but I suspect it's a jazz track from someone else. It's that that drives me crazy about Alicia, the fact that it seems like you've heard the music before. I'm not a big fan of sampling but I better get used to it. But Alicia from what i can tell kills live. I'd love to see her live. She did a remix of "How Come You Don't Call Me" on Letterman that blew me away and I'm dying to get my hands on some audio of that. So basically I just want more original compositions from Alicia. And she doesn't have to write it. Norah Jones is well admired and she doesn't write all her own stuff, but they are original compositions and she is well versed on her instrument.

Alicia has talent. She also has the ability to surround herself with other gifted musicians. The potential to make really cool original music is alive and well.
My advice would be this:
We've already heard James Brown. We've already heard Donny Hathaway. We've already heard Stevie. I wanna hear what Alicia has to say.
Simply do you and be you. Blaze your own trail.

I saw Alicia days after she cleaned up at The Grammy's from her debut album. She had some shows I know had a few passes, so I went with her. I was curious about all the hype because from what I had heard, I wasn't that impressed. I didn't think Alicia's album was horrible, but it didn't come close to the hype. When I saw her in concert, I thought she was cute. But the show lacked a lot. She's a talented piano player, but she's a long way from Roberta Flack. Roberta was young as well when she first hit, but so much more well rounded as an artist. Live, Alicia's vocals were some what weak. I felt bad for her because u could sense so much of the audience wanting her to do well, if for no other reason, to back up winning all those Grammy's. I think it was just too much hype for her to back up. She wasn't and still isn't there yet. Maybe in a couple of years, she'll find her OWN style or learn to blend her influences better. Maybe she should listen to other styles of music and draw from that as well. Everything has already been done. No one is a complete o.g. All the greats has "stolen" from someone. From The Beatles to Prince. It's what u do with what u have taken that counts. How u shade it, color it, blend it with your own thing. Alicia hasn't struck upon that yet. Also, not everyone who can play an instrument can be an ARTIST. I like Alicia, I give it to her that at least she can play something. But, that has been part of her problem with the public. Because she plays an instrument, the critics has dubbed her a "prodigy", which she isn't. But compared to all the other female pop vocalists in the market, she's going to stand out. So it's two fold. She has potential, no doubt about it. It all depends on how she deals and not getting caught up. If she stays clear and keeps trying to develop her OWN thing, then she'll be alright.

I've never thought about Maude as butch. Alicia yes, but Maude? confused

Anyways, is it just me, or does the melody to "Secrets" (I think that's the name of her latest) sound a little like the Police's "Wrapped Around Your Finger?"

I like Alicia, she has some good stuff. But WHAT IN THE HELL was she thinking when she put on that awful outfit for the MTV Music Awards? Dear lord, she's beautiful and she actually looked really bad that night.

I like Alicia, but I'm not a very big fan. Something she can do to improve her music- stop using samples, and be a little bit more original with her material. She's definitely talented. It's just very familiar, not new or exciting.

I feel that Alicia has talent. However, I like her better live than her studio work. In the future, I would like to see her use more live instrumentation and less sampling in her cd's. She also needs to work on her vocal ability (less straining). Lastly, she needs to find a sound that fits her. I would like to see her do R&B, funk and jazz. I am not feeling her hip hop mixed with R&B. Let Lauryn Hill handle that.

Yeah that's the thing. They hyped her up so much, it's been kind of hard for her to live up to it. I think that she's talented but she'll always get a little flack because it's gonna take some time for her to actually be what they've labeled her. Thanks for your reply!

See that's what I like; how and when she mixes hip hop into her songs but I'm pretty sure that you guys expect more lol.

I would really love to hear the funk and jazz though. I totally understand where your coming from with that. I actually want to hear her try everything. Jazz, blues, rock, funk and just all of it lol. She's one of the very few that I think can pull a little bit of everything off.

UncleGrandpa Luv that avatar!!! It’s the bomb! Raiders or Prince Avatar, it don’t get any better. P is a lot like Davis Commitment 2 Excellence. LoL don’t get me started. Die hard Raider Fan

Luv Alicia!! Yes she does need to find her on identity. She can become a great singer if she just be herself. She also needs to work on those vocals, but other than that she outshines a lot of her competition as far as being a singer. After hearing her on the VMAS awards she definitely has some work 2 do. Once she comes up with her own original compositions and get that voice on track she’ll be alright. Some people can’t play music and sing at the same time. LOL…..

What do you mean by stagecraft and presence? Does it mean that her live shows aren't that good?
