ThreadBare said: Pat Methany's comments (I appreciate that interview, by the way), alluded to what I believe is the central bane for most of his critics:
Kenny G. is a mediocre-playing, curly-haired, Jewish man making a ton of money and gaining huge amounts of popularity on an instrument most widely associated with black men and soul. In short, he's the Vanilla Ice or Justin Timberlake of the saxophone, and it ticks off a lot of people. I don't think it matters that he's white that people hate him, just that he sucks. I gotta admit, I don't mind Kenny G at all. I particularly like "Songbird". And I often find myself listening to online smooth jazz radio. Sue me.

I'm one of the few people around here who actually likes him I have a few of his late-80s CDs,and I never understood why he gets such a bad rap.His music isn't experimental or groundbreaking, but it's pleasant to listen to.And in this era of sampled music and thugged-out,non-musicians who somehow manage to top the charts,Kenny is like a breath of fresh air.

The above is a HUGE deal on any instrument but especially with a soprano sax. tA Tribal Disorder
http://www.soundclick.com...rmusic.htm You play Sidney Bechet's records and then hear this other shit. Really, it makes you chuckle in sympathy. I'm not trying to be unfair and compare Sidney to these cats, but what I'm saying is when you pick an istrument like that you betta hear him in order to have a BIG ASS realization on what you're doing AND unless you know damn well that you won't fuck it up, throw that shit out the window. I'm not a purist but DAYMN,,,,,why do folks tolerate with sloppiness and then put a lame excuse such as "Thats the RAW form". You fuckin' bullshiting me?
