Particularly Ponty, Hancock, Weather Report, Pat Metheny and McLaughlin.

Ronnie Laws, Rodney Franklin, George Duke & Herbie Hncock were always my favs. But the other thing that really hit me when looking at this thread was how much I miss the classic album cover. There are some great ones posted here.

"Romantic Warrior" by Return To Forever has been a fave of mine since I was 12. As usual, all the obvious choices have already been mentioned.

Larry Young - Unity - 1965
(Larry Young, Elvin Jones, Joe Henderson, Woody Shaw)

Tony Williams' Lifetime - Emergency - 1969
(Tony Williams, Larry Young, John McLaughlin)

Miles Davis - Bitches Brew - 1969

Although Young's Unity was released in '65, the material still sounds like straight ahead to me.
His playing style is another story altogether. He's leaving the Jimmy Smith-isms behind and heading further up/down river. Sounds closer to avant garde than fusion to me.

Tony Williams Lifetime? nod

Another album to look at could be the one John Mclaughlin did right after leaving Miles.

John McLaughlin Devotion - 1970
(John McLaughlin, Larry Young, Buddy Miles, Billy Rich)
Anybody have the sessions with Jimi Hendrix and these fellas?

I have some of it-----as you probably heard, it's all really loose, meandering stuff...actually McLaughlin was on acoustic guitar, and you really can't hear him that well...I think it's interesting as historical reference (a few of the things with Larry young are intense at times), but for the most part, it doesn't do any of them all that much justice...(I know McLaughlin hates it)...
But I don't have the Alan Douglas compilation, the Hendrix: "Nine to the Universe" album, which is supposed to have some of the better moments with Young...
