Janet Jackson and Prince Hi, I'm Isel. I've been lurking on this board for quite some time now 'coz I'm a long-time fan of Prince and many other artists. I'm a little intimidated to ask this question 'coz you guys really know your music. But at the same time I figured that if I could find the answer anywhere, it would be here.
Anyway, did Janet Jackson sample or work with Prince for her single Just A Little While from the Damita Jo cd? A member on another message board mentioned this in his post, so I just wondered if it were true. By the way, this is a GREAT forum.

Hi Isel, "Just A Little While" -- although it has slight funk-a-billy influences in the groove wasn't sampled from a Prince track. It's an original recording produced and co-written by Dallas Austin (TLC, Kelis). On a side note, Janet said she's always loved and admired Prince's music -- which was partially the inspiration behind her teaming up with Jam & Lewis on her breakthrough record "Control." Of course, we should all know that Janet's third and fourth albums with Jam & Lewis on-board are drenched in the Minneapolis funk sound. . [Edited 9/12/04 13:04pm]

Thanks for responding, JANFAN4L
I left out an IMPORTANT detail in my original post. According to the message that I read, Prince worked with Janet on Just A Little While before its release??? Prince wasn't credited on the cd, so I'm not sure if this info is even true. The post was a little confusing:"...if you remember i was the one that told everyone that prince was part of a sample of just a little while;" (from Janet's Friends forum) Anyway, I asked the guy for more info. because I thought it was so cool that Prince had worked with Janet, but he never responded. Have you or anyone else heard if this is true?? [Edited 9/12/04 13:52pm] [Edited 9/12/04 13:56pm]

I seem to recall watching Friday Night Videos' coverage of the "Nude" tour, to promote "Graffiti Bridge" when Prince and Rosie performed "What Have You Done For Me Lately?". After every line, Prince shouted to the crowd, "WHO WROTE DAT?"
It left me wondering ever since. Has Prince written for Janet? If so, what tracks? I find it ironic that Janet sounds more like her brother's putative arch-nemesis than her brother. Good night, sweet Prince | 7 June 1958 - 21 April 2016

For all we know that could've been a song intended for The Time and JJ & TL "borrowed" it and gave it to Janet.

Yeah, I have that whole nude tour tv special and when prince says "who wrote that", i think he is just giving some rare credit to his old ex time members Jimmy jam and Terry lewis as them 2 wrote the tune.....Prince maybe felt proud that he essentially got jam and Lewis rolling when he chose them 4 The Time? They proberly saw prince as their mentor at the time (no pun intended)

She gives little sly kinda hints like
"I like sleepin in your clothes" kinda like "I used 2 let u wear all my clothes" - When U Were Mine and "love me just a little while" "all i wanna do is jus love u 4 a little while!" - Dirty Mind. I remember getting this strange email a LONG time ago from this guy in Philly telling me that Prince & Janet were working together. I posted the email on prince.org and we have concluded that it was a fake...maybe he wasnt lyin.... i dunnu. Interesting tho. Straight Jacket Funk Affair

If she did, it would've been all over the Janet fan circles by now. The only people I hear calling "Just A Little While" a Prince inspired/produced song are Prince fans. I think most people are wrongly going off of an old interview Dallas Austin gave MTV about the Damita Jo project. He said: "To me, this is her Dirty Mind," Austin explained, referring to the Prince album that established him as a hormonally charged pop star. "It's a really sexy record, but not in a sensual way. It's bold, it's fun, it's really positive. Nobody's sad, nobody's mad. It's just really fun songs where she happens to be talking frankly about sex." ~ source: http://www.mtv.com/news/a...lines=true
