Actually i disagree with David, i'd say True Blue was her first masterpiece.

ANd the remasters from warner were crap, although the sound was vastly improved, the extras were just extended remixes of the existing songs.

'Like A Prayer' is Madonna's first real masterpiece. With this album, she proved that she is a serious artist capable of writing and singing serious songs. It's a very personal, confessional album with strong, introspective songs that are miles away from the bubblegum pop hits that she was doing just a few years earlier. The highlights are plentiful....there's the ecstatic,gospel-flavored title track, which is one of the best pop songs of the 80s,period.There's "Til Death Do Us Part",which is just perfect. There's the undeniably catchy, upbeat "Cherish".There's a couple of top-notch dance tracks ("Express Yourself" and "Keep It Together"),both of which are well-written.There's the psychedelic, eclectic "Dear Jessie",which has become a fan favorite. There's even a duet with Prince on "Love Song".Although this track is annoyingly repetitive,it has a certain charm to it and their voices blend well together.

It's a shame that the Grammy voters didn't give Madonna the awards she deserved for this album. The title track should have been nominated for "Song of the Year" and the album should have at least received a nod for "Album Of the Year".By the time they finally awarded her with four Grammys for 'Ray Of Light' in 1999,she had already established herself as a highly creative, serious artist ten years earlier.

I really loved it when it came out, but now I can't say that I reach for it in my collection. I agree that is was her first real masterpiece. For the time, it was brilliant. Those Herb Ritts pictures are great too. I loved how she looked with dark, wavy long hair.

Lots of good memories with Chico... wink I did have my hair like hers in the Like a Prayer video for a while giggle Express Yourself is just great, the message, the video... everything. Keep it Together has great remixes from what I remember.

Why is everyone saying that Love Song is repettitive? There is so much going on in that track... it's just minimalistic! I'm gonna have to listen again, but I don't ever remember feeling like that song is repettitive; that's a huge pet peeve of mine. This is the only song I actually reach for!

Ahhhh the Grammys...Well after the Pepsi controversy, you know awards were out of the question!

This is THE madonna album.
People rave about Ray of Light and as much as i like it, it's nothing on Like a Prayer.

This is the most confessional Madonna album dealing with issues of prayer, women's rights, her divorce, mother's death, family, child abuse etc.

Promise to Try gives me chills to this day, the lyrics are so honest and deep.

I don't mind Love Song but it's too repetitive for my tastes.

I still don't get "WHAT DO YOU MEAN IT'S NOT IN THE COMPUTER" on the last track.....

Her reservation.

In "Act Of Conformtation", Madonna starts singing the "AOC" (a catholic chant I totally forget) and then starts saying "I reserve, I reserve...I have a reservation, I have a reservation (a little older and with more attitude) and then finally "What do you mean...". It's pretty funny but I didn't get it the first few times either and thought the track was terrible.

I love the emotions and energy in "LAP" but it wasn't truly great becuase it excluded "Supernatural", a fun and happy dance pop track that would have lightened but kept people on their feet more slow paced child's song "Dear Jessie". All the tracks are very good and unique. I had some reservations with it and "True Blue" (whose last two songs were pretty bad) and think her first truly excellent album was "Erotica".

I still believe that Prince wrote the title track. I don't have any proof, but I believed it before finding out that Prince had recorded his own version.

So he took credit for co-writing "Love Song" but not writing (or co-writing) "Like A Prayer". The opening guitar does sound like Prince though.

When I was in college, there was a book I found in the library that had interviews with various musicians and songwriters. One interview was with Madonna and she said they kept sending tapes back and forth in the mail, collaborating on Love Song. I made a photocopy of it. If I find it I'll post the title of the book.

EDIT omfg I think I found the quote online! http://www.madonnavillage...thers.html

"He came to see me in the play I did last summer in New York and he, just for the hell of it, put together a tape of some rough things that we'd done in all the meetings that we'd had. 'Love Song' was one of the songs and I just said 'You know, this is crazy, it's such a great song - why not put it on the record?' It seemed to relate to all the other songs because it's about a relationship that's a love/hate relationship. So he agreed to it and we kind of sent the tapes back and forth to each other and we'd keep building it. It was like he would write a sentence and I would add on to it and then send it back to him and he would continue the story, basically. It was fun. I played the keyboards myself and because I don't know that much, it kind of came out strange and interesting."

Erotica was a great one, too. I like those songs, Bad Girl, Deeper & Deeper, & Fever. It was very underrated back in '92, though. If she didn't make the book SEX, it would've been her most progressive release of the 90's, wouldn't you think?

EROTICA is TERRIBLY underrated. The SEX book and that horrible (but great camp film) BODY OF EVIDENCE ruined any possibility of the album REALLY being heard. A stunning piece of work - as is LIKE A PRAYER. I said in another forum that Madonna is seriously underrated as a songwriter. She's written/co-written a long list of classic pop songs. However, I think her constant need for attention has definitely taken away from the fact that she is/was a great songwriter. It will be interesting to see what happens when she becomes eligible for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in a few years.

You have to laugh at the number of people Prince has supposedly allowed to take credit for his work.

"Prince worked with XXXXX on the XXXXX album but was just too nice to take credit, so he let them shine instead!"

I don't know how many different permutations of that quote I've seen.

I'm shocked that Erotica sold only 2 million copies--her worst selling album of the 90's. Her recent album, American Life is a campy favorite of mine. I don't really listen to that one that often because it's too acoustic for me.

Pagey

Like a Prayer is the only Madonna album I have ever been able to listen to. My girlfriend is a huge Madonna fan and has all of her stuff. She always says the only reason I like LAP is because Prince is on it. Probably. But seriously the rest of her stuff gets annoying after awhile. I can handle some of the hits but I get sick of her albums REAL fast.

the very early reviews on Erotica were very good, until it got overshadowed by Sex and then Body of Evidence. then, suddenly, all the reviewers decided they didn't like it. which is fair enough. it was all a bit too much at once, but still, it's a great album. my favorite.

'True Blue' contains two of the best songs of Madonna's career---the haunting "Live To Tell" and "Papa Don't Preach".Both of these songs are amazing, taking her far beyond the bubblegum pop hits of the first two albums. But I'm not sure I'd call 'True Blue' a "masterpiece".Much of it sounds really dated, and there are a couple of dreadful songs on there ("Jimmy Jimmy","Love Makes The World Go Round").I like to think of this album as her transitional album---a few moments of brilliance, but not quite a masterpiece. That would come later.

I agree with you regarding the remasters of the first three albums. They gave us remixes (which aren't really hard to find) instead of previously unreleased tracks.Hopefully, when they remaster the other albums, they'll give us what we really want.
