A singer that doesn´t compose is just like a instrumentalist who does not compose. OF COURSE that the songwriter is more talented. HE creates art. A singer only sings. But I am biased because i can´t sing and i do songs. :p

They are BOTH equally important.

Case #1.
Great songwriter/awful singer: Bob Dylan
Great Singer/non writer: Celine Dion

Hey Chico1 I have to disagree with you when it comes to Bob. Most people feel the same as you do, but I am a big fan and I can tell you that Bob sings with more passion than anyone and I do mean anyone!! He may not have a good voice, but he penetrates my heart and soul everytime I hear him sing. His lyrics are so damn perfect and his delivery of a song is flawless. I would like to recommend that you go to your local used cd store and buy "blood on the tracks". Listen to it at least 3 times and then decide if Bob is an "awful" singer or not. Bob is our modern day Mozart!!

Hey Camille wave

I'm not saying he doesn't sing with passion. Undoubtedly he does. No denying. I guess I'm just looking at it as more of a 'technical' thing. Finding key, and pitch. I'm sure most vocal coaches would have a few pointers for Mr. Tamborine man... lol But his voice is also his distinction. So good for him.

I appreciate that you see my point Chico. I know we all have different musical tastes and I wasn't a fan of Dylans until about 10 years ago (I'm 41). I used to hate even hearing a Dylan song because I thought his voice was so bad, but my friend insisted that I try harder to appreciate and him and it worked. He's a pure genius IMO. I can cry listening to almost any of his songs. As far as lyrics go, he is second to none!

songwriter for sure
I have seen a great song be taken to #1 by several great singers and they have the songwriter to thank.
Whoever wrote The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face
Dolly Parton I will always love you
Lionel Ritchie song #1 hit for Kenny Rogers Lady
of course Prince and all of his top ten hits for other people

Not for me. If the music and lyrics suck the singer can't fix it. I would say "nice voice, but no creativity." Thumbs down.

I resent and resemble that remark.

Sincerely,

Whitney Houston

they both need eachother. what does some notes on paper mean to anyone? or a great voice but nothing to sing?

people who do both is greatest as someone mentiones..

Well it really depends on what you are looking for and what kinda music i am personally stuck between Michael Jackson and the one and only Prince mj has a voice only he can match with lyrics and he is pretty much a pop singer where as prince can sing from Rock to Classical no problem so i guess it all shakes down to how you want to even it out MJ deefinatally had undoubital talent but prince by far is the most amazing...

I guess you've only listened The Way You Make Me Feel?
