David Crosby Decries Britney Spears

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Veteran rocker David Crosby isn't universally impressed with what he calls the ``shiny and new'' in the music world.

Crosby, 60, took a break from his ``Tour of America'' with longtime bandmates Stephen Stills, Graham Nash and Neil Young to assess the music scene.

``There's some good people out there, but there's a lot of fluff (too),'' Crosby said. ``Things like 'N Sync and Britney (Spears). These people are about as deep as a birdbath.''

Crosby also said there seems to be a prejudice against old-timers by the media, even though the band, which formed in 1968, got a good review from Rolling Stone after its show in New York.

``They really don't even like having people like us still around,'' Crosby said. ``They want to sell the newest product.''

Is this really surprising?
The only issue I have against this is publically dissing people in public, when the real force behind it is the record companies. I can't imagine nsync and britney liking Crosby after this. He's just alienated himself from a young audience, and probably earned some ill-will from the people he's criticized and their fans. I think there are more productive, positive ways to get his point across (even though I agree with him 100%).

Anxiety

Interesting story. Some thoughts:

1. I think this is a very easy position to take right now, especially considering that the whole bubblegum/boy-band craze is finally on the decline (slowly but very surely). David Crosby doesn't think Britney's "deep"? What a shocker!

2. Regardless of what you think of Britney/NSTYNC, David Crosby is SIXTY YEARS OLD. Is his finger really on the pulse of what's "hot" these days? If it were David BOWIE making this comment, maybe I'd be down with the commentary, but we're talking about a really old man known for his over-the-top drug problems and for knocking up Melissa Etheridge's ex-wife. Okay, CSNY is legendary...but they've never really been "cool", have they?

3. What's with all the musical mudslinging lately, anyway? Kid Rock's been dissing Radiohead left and right in interviews, repeatedly. Why? Musically, Kid Rock and Radiohead are like apples and oranges, and I haven't heard Radiohead goofing on Kid Rock in print or on TV or otherwise...it's not even bitchy fun. It's just confusing and unnecessary. I feel the same about Crosby's comments. Two different worlds.

It's called CAPITALISM. Corporate boards set out to make fast money more and more quickly... our media programs us to see: NEW = BETTER. They put a new brand of toothpaste out, we've got to BUY BUY BUY it!

It'll just get worse until WE organize ourselves and kick some ass.
