Hey paligap, any hints on where I could get Frank McComb's "The Truth" cd without paying an arm and a leg for it? hmmm I can usually depend on Dusty Groove but it's been backordered for months there.

hmmm

I could go on for days listing beloved Old Schoolers: Stevie; Al Green; Earth, Wind & Fire; sly and the Family Stone; pretty much the whole mid-80s Minneapolis scene; Aretha; James Brown; Curtis Mayfield; Marvin Gaye, Sade.....

I'm REALLY, REALLY hard on New Schoolers, though. Mainstream R&B has become so uninspired and manufactured that I could make a hit album in my sleep, I think. There are a couple groups that get lucky from time to time, but the only ones I can immediately think of as having a consistently interesting output would be R.Kelly, Beyonce and possibly Blackstreet. Also, Maya impresses me with her versatility. With better management, she could be another big star, I think.

On the other hand, those who fall into the more pioneering "Neosoul" camp (a categorization which I despise) are too often derivative, overly nostalgic and just boring. They try too hard. If I want to hear Prince, for example, I'll throw on the real thing, not Bilal's whining ass. There are a few I like, though -- Maxwell, Meshell Ndegeocello, India.Arie and Jill Scott are potentially legends in the making, I think; and a few tragically overlooked international acts like the now-defunct French Native (the superior precursors to Les Nubians) and the late British Ephraim Lewis could really have breathed life back into a struggling genre if they'd have been given more attention.

Are you including Beyonce's Destiny's Child material? Because I wouldn't call one album consistently interesting output.

I think we've all laughed enough at my earlier post. My REAL favorite R&B artists:

Janet Jackson
Kelis
Maxwell
Alicia Keys
Terence Trent D'Arby
Raphael Saadiq/Lucy Pearl

I was never really into R&B growing up. I listened more to funk, mostly the Minneapolis stuff which I've excluded from the list. I have several greatest hits discs by older artists like Stevie Wonder, Rose Royce, Diana Ross, The Spinners, Rufus, Harold Melvin, etc, and I really enjoy listening to them, but I wouldn't call them my favorites.

For me I've never liked B2K. They're just another wannabe imitations of Dru Hill who only sing the kind of songs young girls would actually like.
Ashanti, well, she doesn't impress me much with her songs either, they are just to ordinary to listen to.
Brandy's good.
Jahiem is rising higher with every album he makes.
Beyounce - she ain't married Jay-Z yet?
Usher - well, I believe everyone's still getting a kick out of his confessions.

The thing is most of these artists, yes, they do move a whole load of units but much of their songs have no indepth meaning. They're only there to pleaase the crowd. Imagine someone wanting to learn about LOVE from a boy's group like B2K. What would they know about love, when I bet they haven't yet been through a broken heart yet.
Much of today's present R n' B artists are just out there to sell records and if possible win a Grammy and drive a caddy to the next American Music Awards show. Ain't no much creativity in them except recycling beats.

Thanks so much! I'm going to check this out! I'm always looking for good neo-soul music. In fact, I just got XM Satellite radio because they have an amazing station 61 - The Flow. Anyways, my favorite R&B artists in the "neo-soul" category are:

Angie Stone - all albums
Jill Scott - all albums
Erykah Badu - all albums
Amel Larrieux - Bravebird
Alicia Keyes - Songs in A Minor
Goapele - Even Closer
Meshell N'Dgeocello - all albums
Sade - all albums
India Arie - all albums
Lauryn Hill - Miseducation (it's been so long I almost forgot her!!)

Rahsaan Patterson - all albums
Van Hunt
Bilal
Martin Luther (similar, but better than Bilal)
Maxwell
Kenny Lattimore
Eric Benet
D'Angelo
Sweetback - various vocalists

I don't like: Calvin (I only like his duet with Angie), Musiq (he annoys me after a while), Anthony Hamilton

I agree. Actually, I liked Groove Theory better than both of those, but I was hoping Amel would at least follow the path she was on with Infinite Possibilities....
