Medulla: Bjork is an insane genius All I have to say is if you haven't yet heard "Medulla," Bjork's latest album, you definitely need to hear it.
With the exception of sparse keyboards, programming and some beatboxing care of Rahzel and a few other notables, it's pretty much all unaccompanied vocal. It's weird as all hell, but I'm feelin' it! When I get through the whole thing, I'll post a quicky review. [Edited 9/9/04 20:42pm] Ὅσον ζῇς φαίνου

technically, the rahzel stuff is vocals too.
well, no "technically" about it...it is. i was kinda on the fence about this album till i found the DVD about the making of the album, and seeing what went into it kinda gave me a newfound respect for all the crazy shit on that record.

smith??? Kate Moss silly!! You know that part in Ancestors? It sounds very similar to her regurgitating a subway meatball sandwich.

It IS genius AND insane ~ two of my favourite things! I love this work more every time I hear it and was crazy about it from the first listen. Can you imagine what a live concert of this would LOOK like?????

Yep. I hunted that dvd down the day it came out and watched it before listening to the cd. When I listened to the cd, I did so in headphones at night, in the dark and I was stoned. It was a magical experience!

at the Kate stuff!!!
I will admit, I had a very successful listening session with this CD last weekend. Course, it was as the sun rose and I was totally schwacked, but I don't think THAT had anything to do with my sudden enjoyment of the CD

Most of the critics I've read have said it's interesting, innovative, and boring.
I'll probably give it a pass, though I'll get around to listening to a couple of tracks eventually. I really like Bjork, but in small doses, and her voice is the least interesting thing on her albums IMO. That sounds weird considering who Bjork is, but that's just me. What did you think of Mike Patton? Is he cute or what? Seeing him take orders from Bjork is a major turn on.

My friend said that too. I have to make you a compliation! You really need to hip yourself to Kate, especially if you dig Tori.

Ex-Moderator | I can't get into it. I love, love LOVE Bjork. But this one is just not happenin for me yet. It's like crazy atmospheric beauty and all, but I can't figure out what that atmosphere is yet. Should I listen in the shower? Should I listen while I'm having a smoke on my porch after work? Should I listen while clipping my toenails and petting my cat? During brunch? After a rainstorn? I don't get it. Yet. |

I'm thinking the best time to listen to this is in the middle of a full moon night on a cold winter's day with a bottle of Pinot Noir and something psychoactive.

I've got a bottle of Pinot Noir just waiting for it. Perhaps I'll post my review in January, then. |
