4 the JAZZ fans.... Does anyone have "Hard Groove" by Roy Hargrove..it came out in 2003 and features guests: Common, Erykah Badu, Mechelle Ndegeocello, D Angelo and Q Tip...I LOVE this cd! It is contemporary jazz with an urban feel to it..it is EXCELLENT!!!!! especially if you love the bass guitar...there's some MEAN licks on there...(esp..the song "Out of Town")

Hargrove's hardcore jazz fan base will probably want nothing to do with this
even thought there are good tracks that the hip-hoppers are not on. Hopefully it will show hip-hop listeners what original music played by, in this case, funky jazz musicians can add to the evolution of the genre. This would mean that the "rapping" contingent will have to step up their game to keep pace with the improvisational skills of this type of musician. If you notice, the "rapping" element was kept to a minimum. Regarding your comment on the bass playing, Pino Palladino is all over this CD.

HARGROVE's hardcore fan base needs to sit down if they have a problem with this CD.....we always talk about how the young people knows nothing about REAL music.....Hargrove took the FEW real artists of this generation and assembled them on this CD.....I think that Hargrove coulda been using those artists to draw the young crowd to what REAL music is....even the tracks that Q Tip, Erykah and D Angelo are on are GOOD and dont sound like HARGROVE is trying to crossover or appeal to the masses...u noticed that even tho these younger artists are on this CD....they dont overshadow the music, instruements and arrangements...also, most of us on this board feel that we listen to REAL music...coincidentally..I have seen people on this board say that they listen to and LIKE all the guest artists that Hargrove has on this CD..... Yes, INTERLUDE does remind you of FAMILY NAME...isnt that Meschell Ndegeocello on bass on INTERLUDE? The point I should have made more clearly is that the "hardcore jazz fan base" I was referring to are not generally "young people" at all but older traditional jazz listeners. Personally, I don't have a problem with these musical fusions and if it draws younger listeners to improvisational musicians all the better. This project also reminds me of what Quincy Jones did with Back On The Block on a much smaller scale. The bass player on Interlude is Reggie Washington. tA Tribal Disorder

The Audience....I gotta question for you...what is the average age of the jazz listener/buyer? Can you provide any stats?? I'm curious to know....I'm 24 and I have been listening to jazz since FORVER...I had to be about 10 when BACK ON THE BLOCK came out and I played that LP(yes record LOL) backwards forward upside down and inside out...what do you think the avg jazz listener/buyer is..also how many copies on avg does the #1 jazz CD sell in a week? | |

Stats I couldn't give you. (Knowing myself, i'll probably end up hunting this down) Off the top of my head i'd guess the demographic would include the following: ~Music students exposed to jazz through a course of study ~Baby boomers exposed to the music through parents who played it in the home ~Younger listeners exposed to the music via projects like Hard Groove. ~The adventurous music listener (age not being an issue) ~Whatever categories I haven't included Adding all these together, you've still got a relatively small number based on diminishing jazz sales vs pop sales over the years. I thought it was interesting..I could appreaciate it I don't have the Bird Up release but have heard bits and pieces of it. Some of the pieces I heard held my attention and others made me cringe. Personally, i'm not a big fan of sampling and remixes anyway. And messin' with Charlie Parker? Sounds blasphemous. 
But I try and keep an open mind where music is concerned. You see, I think somewhere out there is a young bad-ass Bird-influenced sax player. (probably quite a few) Why not find that guy and do this kind of project? Wishful thinking on my part maybe. tA Tribal Disorder
