Stone Temple Pilots: Appreciation Thread

Hey guys,
As a tribute to STP, I will have an album cover for an avatar each week of this month.
Last week I had Core, and this week it’s Purple. Anyone who wants to show their love for this great band can post here! What’s your favorite album? Song? Concert? Name your favorite drug used by Scott Weiland, I don’t care lol. Just post anything cool in remembrance of Scott, Dean, Robert & Eric.

Yep. It seemed that he was never really able to get himself together going in and out of rehab. I hated it when he left STP to join Slash's group. Oh well. Sour Girl was one of my favoirte songs by STP.

lol True. Well, he seems to be doing o.k. with Velvet Revolver. Let's hope he keeps his head on straight with those guys. I really love Weiland, and hope he doesn't destroy his talent with drugs.

I just got "Thank You". Great songs. They had a real talent for making really hard rocking yet also melodic. The "Purple" album was just amazing and then things kind of fell apart for them.

STP was underrat4ed and slagged by critics, much like LEd Zep was for a long time.. I think theyve stood the test of time and showed they're not just a Pearl Jam ripoff band like they wee often accused of being.. I got to meet them many times and worked with them before they even had a deal. Nice guys, but Weiland was always not quite right.., which made him a great frontman.

STP were awesome. Who knows, maybe it's not entirely over for them. Remember when Scott put out his solo album, and the other guys got a new singer & put out a CD called 'Talk Show'? So we can't entirely count them out forever (though I do love Velvet Revolver, and want to hear more from them).
My fav. songs are Creep, Atlanta & Black Again.
If I want your opinion, I'll beat it outta ya!

I've been spinnin' that cd recently. LOTS of beautiful tunes on there. They just sound like a really great band on that album. Totally unafraid to delve into some jazzy blues. "And So I Know" and "Adhesive Love" are a couple of their finest moments.

I was reading Spin a few months ago, and one journalist argued that
Smells Like Teen Spirit was not the best song of the 90's, but instead Interstate Love Song was. It is a timeless tune, in my opinion.

My favorite band from the 90's. I love most of their stuff but Purple was their high point, IMO.

Live they were just as good and I loved how the guitar player was so influenced by Zeppelin

You may be right. One time I was in the gym and they were playing music, and I said "this band sounds like STP". My friend goes, "dude that's Zeppelin!" Oops. But Dean is one of my top five favorite guitar players. He's great.

As a guitarist I can assure you that his solos are dripping with Zeppelin influence and if you've ever read any interviews he acknowledges it.

STP is one of the few bands that made the influence their own, rather than try to find a Robert Plant to sing over it. It's the main reason why I love this band and I agree that their stuff is timeless, another sign of greatness.

Ever hear their cover of "Dancing Days"? It got a nod from Robert Plant as a band that he thought was worthy of a Zeppelin comparison.

Thanks for the info. I haven't heard "Dancing Days", I'll have to check that out. Dean's diversity has always impressed me, so I'm not surprised to see Plant give him props.

I think they are really great, I notice some cool chord progressions coming from them, they have a kinda of jazzy flair and the lead guitar lines complement the song very well. And there is Scott on the top of that with beautiful melodies and very well written lyrics. BUt i can´t stop and listen to the "4" album, I think it is very boring compared to Tiny music and Purple and even , and it is strange to notice that it´s the only album he did that he was not messing up with drugs at the time. confused

They are great. I played the hell out of their first cd. I have a fond memory of watching their MTV Unplugged performance. I have it on tape somewhere... Scott was rocking back and forth in a rocking chair. A great show over all. I had incense, candles and the black light on.

Wow, I was waiting for someone to finally mention No.4. I love this album! Compared to other things that came out back in '99, this was sooo rockin'! Songs like "Down" and "Glide" come to mind. Some critics hate "Sour Girl" and some love it. I think it's one of their best tunes ever.
As far as the drugs, I remember Dean saying in a Rolling Stone interview that Scott locked himself in a bathroom while they were trying to track the song "Church On Tuesday" (which is another tune I love). Dean was bangin' on the door saying: "why don't you f***ing share, man?" lol
I believe the album they recorded where Scott was totally sober was Shangri-La-Dee Da. I've heard some say that Scott was better when he was high. hrmph

I've never seen that performance because I got in to these guys late.
I've heard some critics call it "lackluster", but hey, what do they know? lol
Guess I need to see for myself. I've heard the acoustic version of "Plush" and it is nice.

STP could have gone down as one of the all-time greats. Too bad things didn't work out (and I hope Scotty gets his stuff together).

Anyway... I agree, Robert DiLeo is very very yummy. Anyone know of any shirtless pics of him? There was one of the band in a swimming pool, but Rob was up to his neck in water. confused
