Patrice Rushen

I brought her complation cd today WHAT A TALENT! She's a classically trained pianist her parents enroll in her at USC music class her she was 3 yrs old, she also was the first women to be name musical director of the emmnys, and also made some of the funkiest jams. Song like forgive me nots, you remind me, and feels so real. She was the Alicia Keys of the 80,s but never got near the accolades she deserve, also I believe there's some connection to Prince, but I'm not sure about that. So let's give it up for Patrice Rushen.

In 1978,Patrice helped Prince with synthesizer programming on his debut album. He reportedly had a major crush on her,and he later wrote "I Wanna Be Your Lover" and/or "I Feel For You" for her.In 1989,she appeared in his band briefly, playing keyboards during his perfomance of "Electric Chair" on that 'Saturday Night Live' anniversary special.

I love her music...some of my favorites are Number One (instrumental track), Have'nt You Heard, Forget Me Nots, You Remind Me, Feels So Real. I've heard about Prince writing "I Wanna Be Your Lover" about her as well. I didn't know about I Feel For You. She released a project with Ndugu Chancler, Alphonso Johnson and Ernie Watts and they go by the name "The Meeting".
Ohhh you keep saying stay the niiiiiiiiight
Just let me rock you 'til the morning liiiiiiight
It's cold outside
And much too late to driiiiiiiive
You know I need you baby
I'm so lost without your love

Favorite songs by her...

"Look Up" (1980)
"Haven't You Heard" (1979)
"Remind Me" (1982)
"High In Me" (1984)
"Forget Me Nots" (1982)

Alot of people don't know this, but in 1988,Carlos Santana formed a band with Miles Davis,Patrice Rushen,Wayne Shorter and himself. They performed a few dates together, but never completed a full album. But Carlos says that he wants to release some live recordings and unreleased tracks that they recorded.Should be interesting.

Can't say I ever cared her pop things. In that case, she's no better than AK. "Forget-me-nots" don't ring with me like Before The Dawn does. In any case get out & find The Lenny White Project's Salute to EWF. Patrice is holding down the piano chair. This no copmpromised b/s smooth jazz crap, but a full blown jazz session.

I don't think I would put Alicia Keys In the same category as Patrice Rushen , certainly not yet.... Patrice actually emerged in the early 70's, with adventurous jazz albums like Prelusion and Before The Dawn. She gradually worked her way towards a more commercial sound, while simultaneously continuing her jazz explorations...I haven't heard Anything like that from Ms.Keys...

It was the song "Baby" in which Charles Veal(her then-boyfriend) arranged/conducted the strings in that song in which he didn't take the credit too. Actualy, the other song was "Why You Wanna Treat Me So Bad" but being the proud sista that she's always been, she passed on both joints.

And BTW, I'm fimiliar with that collaporation with Miles/Carlos/Wayne project. I know somebody who heard some bootlegs featuring these pre4mances and from what he told me, those gems doesn't deserve to be in the vault.

She's living a life of music DEEPLY. Still doing this musical-directing, radio shows scores/TV shows scores composing, jam sessions, gigging in jazz festivals and all that shebang(She's pretty active in her San Fransisco homebase from what I hear). I caught her in a Juke Joint in Harlem 2 years ago with Ndugu Chancler, Freddie Washington, Charlie Hunter & Roy Hargrove and maaan, I hope she keeps doing what she did that night. If you guys eva caught her then check her live,,,,trust me its a treat.

I have ALL of her albums except that damn motherfuckin' "Shout It Out", if somebody have that album in CD holla at me fast, I'm DONE searching for that shit.

I saw this CD in the record store yesterday but I didn't know what it was.I found it in the Earth Wind and Fire section. Is it worth buying? I guess it's some kinda EW&F tribute album performed by jazz musicians? Give me a review.
