Blacks Singers That You Thought Were White

Have there ever been songs you heard where it was a black singer and you thought they were white? Here are some of mine:

Get Right Back To Where We Started From - Maxine Nightingale
Lead Me On - Maxine Nightingale
Drift Away - Dobie Gray
Boys Are Back In Town- Thin Lizzy/Phil Lynot
Soft And Wet- Prince (This was before I had the album and never had seen Prince. I thought it was a white girl singing.)
Love/Arthur Lee (all of their stuff)
Who is it for you?

nammie "What BGZ says I believe. I have the biggest crush on him."

i don't know the name of the song or the name of the singer (though i think she's dead, if tat helps) but there is a song with lyrics like "loving you...la la la la la, la la la la la, la la la la la la la la la...ooooohhhhh, oooooh!"

lol

i know that doesn't help too much but, anyway, i though it was a white woman.

no problem wink. She died of cancer years ago, her daughter Maya Rudolph is a regular on Saturday Night Live (one of her characters is Donatella Versace). I have'nt heard Loving You in awhile but I believe she singing Maya Maya at the end.

yep that's her, she also used to be on City Of Angels (great TV show they took off the air too soon mad). I honestly don't watch Saturday Night Live as much as I used to. I'm a Mad TV fan.

that's the last time I saw it too lol (that was acutally the first time in years i watched it). I watch the older episodes of Mad TV on Comedy Central too. I love Stuart, Ms. Swan, the lady that scratches her throat when she talks - I can't think of her name right now but she has me in tears/bent over laughing. I remember one episode when she and her whole family went camping and they all stepped out of the trailer one by one making that noise with their throats...there was at least 20-25 family members lol. There are so many funny characters and skits, I love that show biggrin

Darius, bingo! I started to mention him in the thread, but I was curious if someone else out there was alive and mention it on their own.

  • Phoebe Snow (I'm still not sure what she is)
  • Vickie Sue Robinson (biracial?)
  • Lorraine Johnson --"Feed the Flame" (There's a white woman on one of her album covers, but I think she's black)
  • Clint Holmes --"My Name is Michael" (Biracial)

I thought that MisTeeq, who sings that somewhat new song "Scandalous", a black British group, was Chirstine Aquerlia or that one girl that sampled "Family Affair".

I'm not hip to Heather. But she does look like a roughed up Brandy. That's cold pimp.

For years, I thought Prince was white...I was one of those narrowed minded African Americans that thought that black people didnt make rock music aka white people music

Hey, what can I say? I was very young and the disco era had a lot of white and black artists. Their voices sounded white to me at the time. This was also the first Brothers Johnson song I ever heard also. By the time "Stomp" came out, I knew better. biggrin

After hearing Hey Joe for the 1st time, I had no idea Jimi Hendrix was black.
A few weeks later I purchased the single and saw his picture on the record sleeve.

Johnny Nash - ("I Can See Clearly Now" and in the 60's, "The Mighty Hercules" cartoon theme song - even though, on this one, he really sounds like Johnny Mathis, now that I think about it...)
