i met tricky in minneapolis while i was working at paisley park
he said prince was his biggest influence
i setup a meeting with tricky and paisley park studio boss tom garneau

he never did record at paisley, but i handed prince 'maxinquaye' and 'nearly god'
his two best albums

i would recommend those two tricky releases to anyone
not a weak song on either LP

1. overcome 45' single played at 33 rpm
2. black coffee

Seen him on just about every tour. Really grown as a live performer. When I first saw him - opening for PJ Harvey on the TO BRING YOU MY LOVE TOUR - he performed with his back to the audience with very little light onstage. The last time I saw him - on the BLOWBACK tour - he was pretty damn good. However, he seems to have run out of steam. VULNERABLE was the first Tricky I decided not to buy.

Oh jeez, I don't know. I've followed him since the very beginning and love nearly everything he put out from '93 til 2000. I think he's very hit and miss lately, but I'm still pulling for him. I just hope he has another brilliant record up his sleeve, cuz Blowback and Vulnerable are sorely lacking. Unlike most folks though, I do totally love Angels and Juxtapose.

I'd say my favorite Tricky songs are:

Overcome
Poems
I Be The Prophet
My Evil Is Strong
Bad Dream
Tear Out My Eyes
360 Degrees
Contradictive
I Sell Guns (Kill A Jew)
Feed Me

Tricky used to be good but has never equalled his debut 'MaxinQuaye'. One of his better collaborations with Massive Attack is 'Eurochild'. Also from that time (1995), compare songs like MA's 'Karmacoma' with Tricky's 'Overcome' and you'll see that they are lyrically almost the same. Then Tricky's 'Hell Is Around The Corner' contains the same sample & beat as Portishead's 'Glory Box' and Tricky is rapping parts of 'Hell's around...' on MA's 'Eurochild'

They are meant to be. "Overcome" is sort of a "remix" of Karmacoma. He is allowed to rehash his own work, don't you think?
