The Meters are surprisingly funky!!!! So last week I was at CBGB's here in NY to see my friend play. Before he went on there was some club music playing. It had some deep, in the pocket, grooves. I was like "What is this??? This is funky!!!!!"
So I found out from the soundman that it was The Meters. And the song was "Sophistcated Cissy". So I'm gonna do some investigating on this group. I do know that a couple of Neville Bros. were in the group and that they're all from New Orleans, but I never really payed attention that place and it's music. Now you're probably thinking, "where the funk have you been?" And I'll go on to say.....well, no I'm not gonna say that. NEW WAVE FOREVER: SLAVE TO THE WAVE FROM THE CRADLE TO THE GRAVE.

Well I saw the thread title and I thought, how would they be "surprisingly" funky, if they are known to be one of the damn funkiest of alltime.
Their best albums have been reissued on CD and I certainly recommend you check out their debut, which "Sophisticated Cissy" is on. I got into it because it has been a rich sampling source for hip-hop acts, so some of their grooves might feel familiar to you. Great discovery!

When U're thru with them first very very funky instrumentals
I highly recomend U get the album Rejuvenation. I remember in the early 90's when hearing the song People say at a club & it was the funkiest song I ever heard it seemed.People went nuts on the dancefloor. This was years before the album came out on cd so I started tracking down the LP.It took a year or 2 before finding it in the first place. I paid a lot 4 that album but at that time it was seriously worth it. Songs like Just kissed my baby & Africa is on that 2. /peace Manki [Edited 9/4/04 22:23pm]
