Being the best (ever) or being the Jimi Hendrix of bass are two different things.

No, he is not the jimi hendrix of the bass!!!!!
He is the kind a guy that gets on u'r nerves, wants 2 play bass, but has still a lot 2 learn. I don't like the guy, so it's a good thing Prince is getting rid of him!!!
Had him here in Belgium 2, in Brussels and in Ghent!!! In Brussels it was fine, 'cause he didn't come out very long. But in Ghent he had the opening part of the show. Some1 shoot the guy please!!!!!He thinks he's the greatest and it's written all over him!!!
So Larry if U're reading this TAKE A HIKE AND LEAVE US ALONE
Peace 2 U

well didn't he invent the poping and slap technique?
I don't know that's what I heard....
that would make him innovative just like hendrix wouldn't u think?

More like the "Best Opportunist in the World"...gotta admit that there must be something about the man to have his fangs into Prince the way he does without Prince really seeming to mind it, and that's if he even notices it...makes you wonder, doesn't it?

Hes very good but there are many others who could claim that spot. Check out Bass Lobster & be amazed. wink

Larry has a lot of stamina & is one of the only bass player I know who can keep a 16 beat slap rhythm going all night but there are a lot of good players out there.

Need I mention Bootsy??

Larry is the best bass player and that is exactly why Prince, who is the ultimate musician, makes music with him.

I don't think Prince is getting rid of Larry anytime soon...u know he used to bug the hell out of me too, BUT after the 4/20 show in Hollywood I have much respect for the man...he is an incredible bass player...

Larry's probably one the most innovative, from popularizing all the plucking and thumping that goes on in Funk. Though I think Bootsy did just as much with his elongation of the beat. BTW: Bootsy actually manifests a Hendrix character when he plays space-bass.

I like Rodney "Skeet" Curtis a lot. He was in FUNKADELIC's band along with Billy Nelson (another fave), but is with Maceo now. Verdine White of EWF is great. So are Stanley Clarke, Alphonso Johnson. Stanley is probably my fave for someone who plays both acoustic bass and electric. Finally, Jaco did so much innovative stuff with fretless electric jazz bass; I stillamazed at his work.

Flea is a way better bass player. When's the last time Larry burnt holes in his thumbs from playing? Listen to any Chilli Peppers album and hear the superiority.

I'd say Larry, just barely, over my FAVORITE bass player

BOOTSY BABY BABA

Larry is generally credited with being the creator of that FUNK-INDUCING "slap & pluck" playing technique [which goes by a few other names, too] that is the cornerstone of any REAL funk jam. Even Bootsy himself has credited Larry for that..
so if BOOTSY gives Larry the props, how can I not?

Larry developed that technique in a very creative, free-flowing music environment, working with some of the best musicians in music history. Whatever you think of Larry's religious beliefs, you have to give him props as a bass player, & as a rather soulful singer..

Indeed, there are A LOT of VERY GOOD bass players-
several mentioned in this thread-
but when the smoke clears..

it's Larry & BOOTSY.

ever funkin' on, baba..
I'll see you tonight..
in ALL MY DREAMS..

There was a story that Larry told about him hooking up with Bootsy, I'm thinking on the road somewhere like in a hotel. Larry passes his bass 2 Bootsy 2 get funky with, & Bootsy told Larry he was the man and insisted Larry do his thang with the bass~ They both have great respect 4 the others skill. Thats a beautiful thang~ They are 2 monsters of the bass, but there are others who can tear-it-up as well~ I have no idea who truly is the best.

Yeah Jaco self-described himself with these very words to future boss Joe Zawinul, but even he knows he took a lot from other funk bassists; LG primary among them.

Larry Graham is awesome but I don't think he's the best in the world. The cat that played for James Brown , I think is name was James Jamerson was the shit! They ALL owe gratitude to this cat. As for as the best living bass player BOOTSY he is definitely influenced by Larry Graham, but I believe Bootsy is the greatest overall bassist today.
Wait to you hear his remake with Snoop Dog of We Want the Funk for the Under Cover Brother movie.....FONKAY! Warner Brothers is putting alot of doe behind Bootsy ala Santana. Ahh...the Name is Bootsy Baby.

HA!HA! HA! Fool, LG was kickin' up shit on the bass when Prince was still in the basement with Andre spending all night studying Larry's tracks! Go and listen to "Pow" by Grahm Central Station. Then you will understand why Prince is in awe of Larry. Prince doesn't have bass like THAT in ANY of his songs. Larry's not my favorite bass player, and he's not the "best" in my opinion (see: Victor Wooten as an example), but his influence in bass players EVERYWHERE is undeniable. As I've stated before, "best" is just a myth. There is only different. There is good, and better...but no one will ever know who the "best" is, because he/she may be sitting in a basement somewhere right now and may never even play on a record. Stanley Clarke is one of my all time favorites, but there are a lot of great bass players floating around. Jaco, Bootsy, Victor, Louis Johnson, Marcus Miller, Stu Hamm...etc.

p.s. Flea? Run circles around Larry? I think funking NOT! He's imitating Larry's playing style! HA! HA! HA!

Flea is an amazing bass player and is much more fun to listen to and watch than Larry. No matter what Larry plays, it's always boring.

Dude it's hard to take your knowledge seriously when you misspell and misuse words. Take some fuckin' time to edit the obvious mistakes. Your bad grammar makes EWM look like a genius when we all know he's a fuckin' moron.
