Jazz nuts, looking for some quality guitar...

a la, Django, but I'm looking for recordings with better sound quality. No smooth jazz guitar please, I'm looking for that 1930s and '40s jazz club guitar sound, fast, vibrant, and fun, but without the fuzzy or tinny sound that unfortunately comes with Django's catalogue.

Can anyone help?

Check out some pre-Breezin George Benson, almost anything Grant Green or some remastered Charlie Christian.

Well, I'm skeptical of your George Benson suggestion, he is usually wayyyyy to smoothe elevator guitar for me.

Like many Breezin' and beyond fans, you sound as if you're not hip to what Benson did early in his recording career.

Check out The Cooker, Ready and Able or Return Of The Prodigal Son from George Benson Cookbook

Clockwise, Hello Birdie or Myna Bird Blues from It's Uptown With The George Benson Quartet

and then tell me about limp, lame, The Wave-style "elevator guitar".

Since, we're on the subject of Django, has anyone seen this film?

It wasn't about Django, but a guitar player (Emmet Ray) who's obsessed with Django. lol

This was a brillant film and funny too! falloff I HIGHLY recommend this to any Django fan! Specially you Savoirfaire, I think you'd dig the soundtrack. Oh yeah, it's a Woody Allen film! In case you didn't notice on that big pic I posted. confused

Oh, and you might dig this one too! The whole album doesn't swing, but there's enough swingin on there to keep you satisfied.

It has Art Blakey on drums, what's not to like? thumbs up!

Sin,

Barney Kessel and Kenny Burrell are excellent picks.

I'm definitely gonna run down that Woody Allen movie...

...Sweet and Lowdown (Sean Penn, interesting)

The graphic in your post morphed on you.

Great flick (even though I can't stand Woody Allen movies).

To the original post, Django recorded in the 30's and 40's so if you're looking for a better sound, you won't find one. The technology didn't exist but if I'm wrong let me know where I can find some better sounding Robert Johnson recordings. lol

Seriously though, check out George Benson's first album "New Boss Guitar", it's just amazing.

If you want more of that early type of sound, check out an album called "Dear Mr.Cole" by John Pizzarelli. It's an album of all tunes Nat King Cole made famous and it's got some of that Django type sound you're looking for. There are a lot of vocals on it, but Pizzarelli's got some teeth as a guitarist so you won't be disappointed (not to mention his trio is made up of some hot players too!)

RealMusician

"Chasin' the gypsy" with saxophonist James Carter, from 2000. Actually a tribute to Django Reinhardt, featuring Jay Berliner and - my favorite - Romero Lubambo on acoustic guitars, plus some great saxophone playing!

All of you that are familiar with mr Carter: what if HE would play with Prince instead of Maceo and Candy... Now that would be something!
