LoL

It is like Pluto; BOOM!

Both have a tendency to tire me out, but I try not to skip, as I think it's part of a story, esp Ancestors.

"Pluto" is one of my absolute favorites as well. I adore the intensity in that song - it reminds me of an asteroid burning through the atmosphere. I guess when I heard "Ancestors" for the first time today, I was all geared up for a difficult album but I hadn't heard anything quite so, erm...DISSONANT?...from Bjorkiepoo before.

To be honest, I hear a lot of influence from her hubbie's Cremaster soundtracks (composed by Jonathan Bepler) in Medulla - Cremaster 3 in particular had a lot of a cappella stuff going on in the soundtrack...prolly not a conscious influence, but I couldn't help notice similarities in some of the melodies and styles between the two.

My first listen of this song felt like 1/2 an hour. It's fantastic!

And Vina, I love the way you expressed discovering your love of Pluto biggrin

To me Pluto has always reminded me of Angels on the march towards Armageddon set to kick Evils ass once and for all.

I love the grunts and groans in this song. How else do you think we get ancestors giggle

i don't know nuffin bout no medulla DVD. confused

i looked around at beast buy this morning for other bjorkie treats that might have come out with the new wrecka, but all i saw was an overpriced "special edition" for twenny bucks, and all that it looked like it had was different packaging and a poster. was this the DVD thingie? if i woulda seen that advertised on the cover, i'da gotten it. pout

It is a toughie. Somehow the song makes me very sad and upset though. That throat singer sounds like she's really suffering. It reminds me of some demonic animal having a seizure. The piano and Bjork actually ground the song from being a total mess. I guess it's the most difficult on the album though cuz it seems to be splitting peoples' opinions. My brother thought it was hilarious and my best friend called today while totally high and left a voicemail message immitating the drowning/growling vocal thingy.

Don't you usually find it's better to just listen to the album straight? A lot of times if I download first or read the lyrics on first listen or things like that, it takes away from the first impression.

Yeah, I dunno. For some reason, this time I really wanted to see the making of it... to kinda get inside it first. I guess I got excited from the pics I saw on her website of her in the studio.

Ain't no shame in that. Whatever works. This is easily her most challenging album yet, so any way you can penetrate it, go with that.

Ok, I heard it. Whoa. I saw some of the recording session on the dvd first, thank God. I can see how this would have freaked me out more if I hadn't seen this chick vocalize like that. It doesn't look as ugly as it sounds... it does look a little painful, but it's not so bad.

That was very much a 21st Century chamber music piece. I liked it. The groaning is pretty weird, but Bjork sounded great on the track! I think it's a cool experiment to just throw all those random sounds and melodies together. That is probably what she was trying to portray: The cosmic oneness of everything and the beginning of our species.

eek Damn, that's deep. You should have seen her face while watching the throat singer do her thang... She looked like a little girl on Christmas Eve.

giggle <---- Bjork.

Edit
Here is the throat singer recording Ancestors:

I saw a clip of that on the Inside Bjork dvd. I'm sure I'll get into it more when I see the full clip. wink I'll eventually get all her dvds, so I'll see it!
