Robert Johnson/Prince

I'm a huge, huge fan of Robert Johnson. His box set is excellent and is crucial to anyone who digs British rock. From The Stones, Yardbirds, Cream, to even Eric Clapton's latest cd of him redoing Robert's songs, the man's influence has been huge. One British rock band in particular "borrowed" quite heavily from Robert Johnson. "Borrowed" is the term mags like Rolling Stone and my fave, Mojo likes to use. I'll just say what it is, stealing. Ripped off from the man, wholesale. Anyway, that's a whole different topic. The reason I mentioned P is do any of u recall hearing about Prince playing the role of Robert Johnson in a movie about his life? I read in either Controversy or Uptown back in the early 90's about it. I always thought that would be interesting. I have seen some similar "traits" to that of Robert Johnson's legend and even more so, "paths" that P has appeared to take that has been very similar to that British rock band I mentioned earlier who basically worshiped Robert Johnson. Anyway, my question is if any of you recall hearing or reading that article on Prince playing the role of Mr. Johnson?

The rumour certainly existed but I can't recall ever seeing anything that showed it was anything more than a rumour.

And since you don't answer my orgnote, just to let you know, I know exactly what band you are referring to of course. I'm just confused by your initial post, because I thought you were a fan of them yourself. shrug

The rumor was that Prince had brought the rights to a book that was written about Rob.
I think he would be great in the part but now a days he has mellowed out and I don't know if would work. He does not look anything like Rob but,Prince has had that "mystersy he sold his sold, nine lives arura around him."

That's why I think Prince, more so than anyone else in modern music would have been perfect for the role. Not now, cuz he wouldn't cop to any of that shit now, but earlier in his thing? Hell yeah! Before Under The Cherry Moon, when Prince was trying to get Madonna to play his love interest, they were working on something else that was to be called "The Prince Of Darkess". Yeah, Prince's spooky ass would have been right to play Robert Johnson.

Yup, I remember reading that in a few articles on Prince around '89/'90. That definitely would have been an interesting project...he was so immersed in the whole duality thing at the time:Good vs. Evil, Gemini, damnation/redemption, etc...the Robert Johnson story might have been right up his alley...
