80s R&B Classic of the Day: "Slow Dancin" by Chaka Khan and Rick James (1982)

I was reading the new issue of Jet magazine, and there is a very good article on Rick James' life and career. There are also several pictures from his funeral, and I noticed that Chaka Khan was there. Then I remembered the duet she recorded with James in 1982---the sexy, funky "Slow Dancin".Do you guys remember that jam? This song would have easily went straight to Number One on the R&B charts, but oddly enough,it was never released as a single.I heard that Warner Bros (Chaka's label) really wanted to release it as a single, but Motown (James' label) said "No way".Nevertheless,R&B radio stations placed this track in heavy rotation, and it quickly became a much-requested radio hit.I can't believe that I almost forgot about this song!

"If I smile at you, would you walk away...or would you have this dance with me?"

I didn't like the song that much when I 1st heard it but after hearing that damn horrible REMIX(from the remix project) I came to terms with the original version and eventually dug it 2 death.

Speaking of which, I have a pic of Chaka & Rick both(from that recording session) laying on the studio ground with Chaka grinning like she landed where the honey & the milk flows lol

Damn those days.

Yeah,it's amazing that it was never released as a single! In my area,it received more airplay than the "official" first single from her album (a cover of Michael Jackkson's "Got To Be There").Because Chaka recorded for Warner Bros. and Rick recorded for Motown, there was a "contractual conflict" that prevented the song from becoming a single.A similar thing occured with the 1984 Jermaine Jackson/Michael Jackson duet "Tell Me I'm Not Dreamin".Jermaine's label Arista really wanted to release it a single (it would have easily became a Top 10 smash),but Mike's label Epic wouldn't allow this to happen.Regardless, the song received a tremendous amount of radio airplay.
