Björk fans cruising Internet file-sharing networks this week stumbled upon a high-tech whodunit: Was that really a husky-voiced Kelis singing on a version of Björk's "Oceania," as the track was labeled? Or was it just another Internet mash-up, the handiwork of some bedroom DJ somewhere?

"It's absolutely, positively Kelis and Björk on the track," Björk spokesperson Sherry Ring said Thursday (August 26). "The song didn't make it onto Björk's album because it was recorded so recently, but a lot of versions of that song were done."

The two quirky songstresses recorded a version of "Oceania" — the first single from Björk's upcoming Medúlla (see "Bjork Album Preview: Beautiful, Baffling and Bothersome Medúlla") — earlier this month, despite being more than 2,600 miles apart. Kelis did her vocals at New York's Electric Lady studios while Björk was in Iceland. But the roots of the collaboration actually stretch back to last year.

"We were doing a show called Fashion Rocks in London last year, and our dressing rooms were right next to each other," Kelis said. "Björk had a Peaches CD that was skipping, and I gave her my copy of the CD. So we started talking and we hung out after the show. We exchanged numbers, and later on she contacted me about singing on a track. I've always really liked her stuff, so I said, 'Yeah.' "

The song began making its way around the Internet after being played this week on BBC Radio's dance-oriented show "The Breezeblock," which can be streamed for free online. Björk's spokesperson said there are no plans to release the song in any form at this time.

Interesting. I will have to give this a listen when I get home. Perhaps Björk should have done Milkshake at the opening ceremonies instead. Then that would have given the athletes reason to peek under her dress.
