MTV's AMP How many here used to watch that show like church? It's probably the last best thing MTV did. I really liked it before it got popular and then immediately fizzled out...as the people producing the show KNEW the genre and had a lot of fun with it. The video mixing was one of the best I have seen. Every Monday night me and my girl Angie would get home from work, order supper, pop on the video (we would tape it as we normally went out on Friday and Saturday nights) watch it, then Melrose Place and then Ally (when it first started). Good times...I'm telling you.
The best part was the opening.."your television is on!". From the music to the visual treats. Sux that it sorta went "mainstream" and then I remember it went to like Sundaynights airing at 3 and it was mostly crap by that time. I loved it when they'd show the "old skool" stuff like tricky, deee-lite, orb. What freaks me out though is that when I watch them now (I have about 10-15 episodes taped)...I see artists I am into NOW and had not heard of until I moved out here (san francisco)....Banco de Gaia who? I miss this show, as it was one fo the first (and last) of it's kind and it was giving oomph to the electronic music scene. Christian Zombie Vampires

i was more of an old skool 120 MINUTES fan - i used to religiously stay up and watch "the young ones" on sunday night, then pop in a tape and watch as much 120 as i could till i started getting sleepy, then i'd hit record and watch the rest the next day after school. when it started getting all "alternative nation" i started giving up on it, and i think i mighta seen one or two episodes of AMP...i remember getting an AMP comp CD and i really liked it, but i have no idea what happened to it.

120 Minutes was THE BOMB. All of us used to watch that...until as you pointed out Alt Nation came on. Every Night at 11!
Best moment I remember was when they went to Medusa's (in chicago) and interviewed Danielle Dax in the Rock Room. New Cure Video...I'd wait up for that shit...fer sure. Dave Kendal Ruled! Though there was no VJ for Amp. THe AMP Comp CD was at AMP's pinacle. I think what happened was Prodigy had just signed onto Maverick with the hopes that electronica would be the next best thing. Now mind you on the Comp was Voodoo People form Music for a Jilted Generation (an album from 2 years previous) however "Fat of the Land" was coming out at the same time...so this was the "tester" to see if Eleectronic music could go mainstream. Sales for FOTL were ok but the single, Smack my bitch up" caused many issues for them. I think the lack luster sales/as well as the Rave thing/E thing blowing up at the same time made record execs scared and proclaim that electronica was just a fad...or a genre they did not want to invest in. AMP then went to just one night a week. A long hiatus...moved to SUndays and then Sundays at 3 or 4 in the morning (when no one could/would watch it..and it had no intro like it used to...all of the specialness had been stripped away.) to prove that electronica was dead or to purposefully kill it and not promote this music that had so much controversy surrounding it. I think Amp was around in the days I didn't have cable. I was a fanatic of 120 minutes though. I'd have to make sure the tape was set to record it, though, as I was ALWAYS at 1st Avenue for the all age sunday nite dance party back in THOSE days. MTV used to be GOOD.

It's quite funny. I actually don't mind what MTV has become. It's definitely a guilty pleasure. But I do think it's a sham that it's supposedly MUSIC television. I've been loving FUSE, VH1 Classic, and VH1 Hits lately. http://elmadartista.tumblr.com/ http://twitter.com/madartista

Definitley, it's a great music station. You just have to find those couple of hours everyday where they aren't doing an infomercial for 6 Second Abs. Hey, they're a small station, they need the paid programming.

I agree with all of you. That show was definitely the shit and was one of the few things I watched on MTV. It was cutting edge for its time and it broke a lot of artist. Hell, they need to bring it back. Of course, they probably won't because it ain't pop enough.

I used to watch AMP!! I used to watch cause I knew that they would show some "eye candy" videos. Videos that were cool to look at. If it wasn't for AMP my Air cds wouldn't be in my collection.
