Shoplifters Of The World/The Smiths

One thing I will always cherish about an old girlfriend from high school was her different tastes in music. She would turn me on to something that I normally wouldn't have checked out. And visa versa. Case in point, The Smiths. The Smiths and a group called Japan. Anyway, she was a HUGE Smiths fan and had everything under the sun. I ended up digging some of their stuff. Johnny Marr is a very good guitarist, so I mainly dug them for that. Anyway, one song that floored me was "Shoplifters Of The World" (Unite And Take Over). That guitar riff on the chorus really fucked me up. I loved that shit! I played it to death, sometimes just the chorus, over and over. The lyrics are very cool as well. Killing song! Anyone digs this cut?

I used to play this song in my store any time somebody was trying to rip me off. It would play until they got the hint and left.

(used to be such an evil bastard...)

This is an AMAZING song. Johnny Marr's guitar is just perfect and the lyrics fit so well.

My fave part goes like this:

A heartless hand on my shoulder
A push - and it's over
Alabaster crashes down
(Six months is a long time)
Tried living in the real world
Instead of a shell
But before I began ...
I was bored before I even began

dammit, now I wanna hear the song and I'm at work! sad

I used to actually cover this song acoustic and plugged in. It's one of my faves! In fact, when I send out mass emails to people about my new band I use the heading "Groove Clinic fans unite and take over..."

Shoplifters of the world has such a smooth vocal treatment.

Other ones that I wore out where:

How Soon is Now?
There is a Light
Golden Lights

Shit, the list could go on forever.

I like it, but I never thought it was one of their major songs. I always saw it as a decent retread of their "How Soon is Now"-style drone.

Shoplifters is one of my Top 3 Smiths Songs. It should have been a massive hit for them.
I also love the band Japan and the solo-work of David Sylvian.Your old girlfriend seem to have excellent taste in music.
