I got the new Bjork CD early because I ordered through her website, and my initial review is it's very... different.

She really goes for the experimental/avant-garde realm on this one. If you don't know what she's done, the album is completely acapella -- there are no instruments on it (at least that's how it's being promoted). She uses people's voices to create the sounds she wants and then edits them as she would any instrument track. On that level alone, I'm impressed with the album.

However, on an enjoyment level, I'm not sure. She seems to have abandoned melodies on this one. That may be too harsh because there are definitely melodies to be found, just not many. The few songs that have melodies I really latched onto and like a lot. (There are two songs that I think are some of her best writing.) Then there are other songs that are just strange. Lots of screaming/wailing, heavy breathing, strange vocal tics, etc. There is one song I absolutely cannot stand (it's called Ancestors). I think on that one she becomes a parody of herself. (I can't wait to see the inevitable Simpson take-off.)

This album will absolutely split people into groups who hate it with a passion and those who like it or at least appreciate it. If you're a major Bjork fan, you'll buy it anyway. If you're a Bjork hater, here's more fuel for the fire. However, if you're in the middle, listen to it first to see what you think. Bjork certainly challenges listeners with this album.
