Damn I'm scurred to participate boxed

Some of these titles are waaaay too obscure for me.

Any thread where the answer is likely to be "Hunky Dorey and the Doo-Littles' 45 promo only single on the SweetCorn Label released in 19sixtysumfin' " is a thread I'm reluctant to join.

Rock on, witcha knowledgeable asses!!!!! headbang

I'll be in the corner taking notes.

I'm not even gonna try and front as if I know a great deal about this subject off the top of my head.
The impetus for this thread, and a little research, was a present I was given by a DJ friend.
That present was a disc called Sampled, Vol.3. which contains full length original compositions that have been sampled and used in some of today's popular music.

(regarding research, i'm convinced I worked for the CIA or FBI in a past life) cop eek

What was amazing to me was not the actual tunes that used the samples, but what some of the sample sources were. David McCallum, Lalo Schifrin, Thomas Newman (fabulous composition from the American Beauty movie score) , Bert Kaempfert (Does anybody know who this guy is?), etc. The use of obscure rock tunes by The Hombres (Let It Out is such a crack-up tune on its own), The James Gang, The Turtles and The Outlaw Blues Band.

As on old-school musician, I readily admit that my initial reaction is to look down my nose at those who use samples (as the foundation of their "songs") as an excuse to become musical artists without putting in the hard work and "shedding" necessary to learn how to play an instrument properly or write original music.

However, a new found respect is being developed for those who "put in work" to find and use more obscure and musically unrelated samples creatively.

The track list...
Disc One:
1. Right on for the darkness - Curtis Mayfield (AKA: Right on! - Silicone Soul)
2. Inside my love - Minnie Ripperton (AKA: 2 people - Jean Jacques Smoothie)

8. Heartbeat - Taana Gardner (AKA: Here comes the hotstepper - Ini Kamoze)
9. Love hangover - Diana Ross (AKA: Freakin it - Will Smith)

I'm sure some Electronica groups have already gotten hold of...

...The Conet Project: Recordings of Shortwave Numbers Stations.

This sounds like a great source of non-musical sound samples for the truly creative.

hmmm
