Good list. I agree with all of them. I love the deep, breathy sound of Oleta Adams' voice, and Karen Carpenter's sad voice always makes me cry. I'd add Deniece Williams and Minnie Riperton to the list, probably my favorite R&B female vocalists.

Since you said "voices" and not just singers, I took into account the uniqueness of the voice as well as the emotion and image it can project. These are the voices I most enjoy hearing. In no order mine are:

Sade
Michael Jackson
Prince
2pac
Maxwell
Chaka Khan
Marvin Gaye
Luther Vandross

If we can go to 10 then add: Barry White & Curtis Mayfield

Using the "best VOICES in music" is so wide open categorically, 8 is a hard number to conform to, but here goes...

Jazz:
Nat King Cole
Billie Holiday

R&B:
Donny Hathaway
Sam Cooke
Aretha Franklin
Chaka Kahn

(Narrowed down to voices, IMO, so many others have tried to emulate.)

Pop:
KD Lang

Rock:
Paul Rodgers

Anxiety

First and foremost: David Bowie (all you non-believers need to listen to his version of "Wild Is The Wind" and call me once your heart palpitations settle)

then, in no specific order:

Annie Lennox ('nuff said)

Sade (the woman can sneeze and make it sound like sex)

Prince (well, duh)

David Byrne (seriously - listen to how he could scream with the best of 'em on old Talking Heads albums, and how he can hold his own with opera on his latest album)

Kier Kirby (it's a crime that she's not still recording with that gorgeous voice)

Todd Rundgren (i've just gotten into his music this year, and i'm blown away at how great his voice is)

Sly Stone (for me, it's still about that little screech at the end of "family affair", but there are few voices sexier than Sly's)

and of course, cuz no list could be complete without 'em, Janis Joplin and Mama Cass. love

Donny Hathaway

Twinkie Clark
Karen Clark-Sheard
Chaka Khan
Luther Vandross
Caron Wheeler
Terence Trent D'Arby, Sananda or whatever the hell he's calling himself these days

Nat King Cole
Natelie Cole
Luther Vandross
patty labelle
