60s British Invasion Thread This thread idea was inspired by flipwilson who said that this was his favorite music period.
Although my leanings are toward fusion/funk/jazz, i'm a sucker for a good pop tune (even some that aren't so good). So this is one of my favorite periods also. The 1st time I heard I Want To Hold Your Hand I was hooked. I HAD to be Ringo behind a set of Ludwig drums. What i'd like to do is get your favorite artists and songs from that period. To make this a little more interesting, since there have already been Beatles and Stones threads, DON'T include them. Anything else is fair game. (Hoping that flipwilson and others will post up some things that i've forgotten.) To prime the pump, i'll list the songs that i've heard... Dave Clark Five: Glad All Over Bits and Pieces Can't You See That She's Mine Because I Like It Like That Catch Us If You Can Over and Over Gerry and the Pacemakers: Don't Let the Sun Catch You Crying How Do You Do It? Ferry Cross the Mersey The Kinks: You Really Got Me All Day and All of the Night Tired of Waiting for You A Well Respected Man Sunny Afternoon The Animals (incl. Eric Burdon & The Animals): House of the Rising Sun Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood We Gotta Get Out of This Place Don't Bring Me Down See See Rider When I Was Young San Franciscan Nights Monterey The Zombies: She's Not There Tell Her No Moody Blues: Go Now The Bee Gees: New York Mining Disaster 1941 To Love Somebody Holiday Massachusetts The Hollies: Bus Stop Stop Stop Stop On a Carousel Carrie-Anne The Who: I Can See for Miles Spencer Davis Group: Gimme Some Lovin' I'm a Man Procol Harum: A Whiter Shade of Pale The Small Faces: Itchycoo Park Tin Soldier Petula Clark: Downtown I Know a Place A Sign of the Times Don't Sleep in the Subway Dusty Springfield: I Only Want to Be With You Wishin' and Hopin' You Don't Have to Say You Love Me Lulu: To Sir With Love Marianne Faithfull: As Tears Go By The Yardbirds: For Your Love Heart Full of Soul I'm a Man Shapes of Things Over Under Sideways Down Chad & Jeremy: A Summer Song Peter & Gordon: A World Without Love I Go to Pieces Woman Lady Godiva Donovan: Sunshine Superman Mellow Yellow Epistle to Dippy There Is a Mountain The Walker Brothers: Make It Easy on Yourself The Sun Ain't Gonna Shine The Searchers: Needles and Pins Don't Throw Your Love Away The Seekers: I'll Never Find Another You Georgy Girl Manfred Mann: Do Wah Diddy Diddy Sha La La Them: Here Comes the Night Mystic Eyes Billy J. Kramer & The Dakotas: Little Children Georgie Fame and the Blue Flames: Yeh Yeh Ian Whitcomb: You Turn Me On Adam Faith: It's Alright The Easybeats: Friday on My Mind The Troggs: Wild Thing The Fortunes: You've Got Your Troubles Wayne Fontana & The Mindbenders: A Groovy Kind of Love Hermans Hermits: Mrs. Brown You've Got a Lovely Daughter Silhouettes I'm Henry VIII There's a Kind of Hush Freddie and the Dreamers: I'm Telling You Now Do the Freddie tA Tribal Disorder http://www.soundclick.com...rmusic.htm "Ya see, we're not interested in what you know...but what you are willing to learn. Nah. American. Good pop tunes though. Might do a thread on them. tA Tribal Disorder http://www.soundclick.com...rmusic.htm "Ya see, we're not interested in what you know...but what you are willing to learn. C'mon y'all."

Anybody have any opinions of the Zombies' album Oddessey and Oracle? I've GOT to have "Time Of The Season."

Time Of The Season is one (of many i'm sure) I forgot about. Great song. That's one question I won't be able to help you with. The only "British Invasion" artist albums I had were pretty much Beatles & Stones. Everything else were 45s. Better check that list again. tA Tribal Disorder http://www.soundclick.com...rmusic.htm "Ya see, we're not interested in what you know...but what you are willing to learn. C'mon y'all."

Great thread and comments as usual ,tA.
I really cant add anything. My current 60s voyage has been more focused on the other half of the decade. In other words, the American bands that were influenced by the ones you listed: The Dead,The Airplane,Quicksilver, the COOL DUDE In your avvie,Love,Moby Grape, etc.... (even ...The Doors ) I know it's become a cliche, but the "Summer Of Love" was a huge turning point for popular music.I guess you might say that it's seeds were sown by the bands you've listed. Thanks for the name-check - I'm absurdly flattered...
Once again, your list is so exhaustive I'm hard-pressed to add anything myself. Every time I thought "ah, here's one he couldn't have thought of" I discovered you'd already named it. I was pretty floored to see you included the Walker Brothers! I rave about "The Sun Ain't Gonna Shine Anymore" to everyone - just a perfect song. The Searchers,Yardbirds, Hollies - you've pretty much named all of my favourites. There aren't many bands or songs I can think of adding off the top of my head, except for a few odds and ends... Herman's Hermits - I'm Into Something Good - I probably ought to be embarrassed mentioning this one, but I absolutely love this song. Donovan - Colours - A really undervalued gem - it made an appearance on the soundtrack to some dreary teenager's movie a few years back. The Tremeloes - One of the seemingly endless supply of bands that created perfect song after perfect song in the sixties. Here Comes My Baby is my favourite - Cat Stevens did a good version of it as well (honestly - I'm not being sarcastic) The Pretty Things - One of the best British bands who never made it in the States. Jimmy Page, to his credit, tried to resuscitate them in the seventies, but they had pretty much shot their load by that point. Scott Walker - After the Walker Brothers split, Scott released four fairly classic solo albums, then severely lost the plot in the seventies. He came back to release a remarkably bizarre solo album in 1995 that sounded like Frank Sinatra fronting Nine Inch Nails, and produced the last Pulp album. Finally - I have to mention Waterloo Sunset by the Kinks. I'm sure a lot of people think this is an unbearably sappy song, but I'll defend it to my death. Paul McCartney at his peak would have been proud to have written this song. [This message was edited Fri Aug 20 19:27:20 2004 by flipwilson]

Thank you MrTation. That sounds like another good thread idea to me (hint). How about 60s American Retaliation (or something like that)? As you said, some great American rock bands were spawned out of The Invasion. Just think about the American pop music timeline in general...pre-invasion - invasion - post-invasion...during the 60s decade. Some amazing musical sea changes. tA Tribal Disorder http://www.soundclick.com...rmusic.htm "Ya see, we're not interested in what you know...but what you are willing to learn. C'mon y'all."

Credit where credit is due. I'd been thinking about doing a thread on this period but wasn't sure if it would garner any interest. Once I saw your comment I knew at least one person would reply. Once again, your list is so exhaustive I'm hard-pressed to add anything myself.
This is all paligap's fault. (He knows what i'm talking about.) There aren't many bands or songs I can think of adding off the top of my head, except for a few odds and ends...

Paul McCartney at his peak would have been proud to have written this song. Good "odds and ends". I'm Into Something Good slipped by me. They almost got left off the list (along with Freddy and the Dreamers) because, during that time among my cirle of friends, they were considered uncool. Outside of my Mom buying the Mrs. Brown You've Got A Lovely Daughter single, I didn't have any of their records. But I never changed the station when their tunes were on the radio. Colours became a folk standard and went on to be covered by the likes of The Kingston Trio and Joan Baez. The Tremeloes and The Pretty Things are groups that i've heard their names but not their music. The Sun Ain't Gonna Shine Anymore (covered by Frankie Valli and...ugh...Cher) is a tune I dug the 1st time I heard it. Another mid-tempo tune with a "sunny theme" that I really like is Don't Let the Sun Catch You Crying. Regarding Ray Davies in general, IMO he's one of the most under-appreciated writers in this period. Especially once you get past the You Really Got Me/All Day and All of the Night stuff and onto his more serious pennings. tA Tribal Disorder http://www.soundclick.com...rmusic.htm "Ya see, we're not interested in what you know...but what you are willing to learn. Here's a kick in the head.
While doing some digging into The Walker Brothers, I found out... a) They're not English but Californians. b) The Sun Ain't Gonna Shine Anymore was written by Bob Crewe (writer/producer) & Bob Gaudio (writer/producer and former Four Seasons member) which partially explains the Phil Spector-like sound of the record. Just to be clear, they didn't producer The Walker Brothers version. Other Crewe/Gaudio colabs: Big Girls Dont Cry Bye Bye Baby (Baby Goodbye) Can't Take My Eyes Off You Rag Doll Silence Is Golden Walk Like A Man Live and learn. tA Tribal Disorder http://www.soundclick.com...rmusic.htm "Ya see, we're not interested in what you know...but what you are willing to learn.
