Nobody has mentioned Bobby Caldwell. Where does he fit in all this? I'd figure lifetime just because of "What You Won't Do, Do For Love," and there are others. It's an interestingly funny topic, but I hope it's not taken so seriously that we can't look beyond color and just embrace great music. Or if you see color, not to automatically assume the style or substance without listening for yourself.
"Funkyslsistah… you ain't funky at all, you just a little ol' prude"!

Black Pass--kinda like a hallway pass to kinda mingle around the Black community..generous airplay on R&B radio

Lifetime Pass

Teena Marie
Michael McDonald
Hall & Oates
Eminem (hate to say it)

Had a Pass once, still OK for past contributions

Elton John
Jon B
George Michael
Sheena Easton (that one album, plus Prince ties)
Sting
3rd Bass
AWB
Culture Club
Joe Cocker
Bee Gees
KC (and the Sunshine Band)

Here you forgot to mention Simply Red, Pet Shop Boys and David Bowie, all of whom appeared on "Soul Train" and had their songs played on black radio - "Holding Back the Years" (Simply Red), "West End Girls" (PSB) and "Fame" (DB) respectively.

Beastie Boys? I don't recall hearing them a lot on my dial.

In L.A. (my hometown) I remember growing up hearing the Beastie Boys songs on urban/black/R&B/hip hop radio all the time (most notably KDAY 1580 AM, KKBT 92.3 The Beat & KPWR Power 106).

They played:
Brass Monkey (I constantly hear this song on "Mixmasters/Old School" shows to this day)
Paul Revere (that beat is sick as hell)
Girls
Intergalatic

"Licensed To Ill" is a hip hop classic.

Plus, the Beastie Boys toured with Run DMC and Big Daddy Kane back in the late '80s. They were a part of the Def Jam tour.

Good calls, all.

I'd add

Lifetime:

Heatwave: on the strength of "Always and Forever" ALONE.

Bill Evans

Beastie Boys

Dave Brubeck:
for the immortal "Take Five" AS WELL AS his fights to play with an integrated band in the South during the 50's and 60's.

"ex officio" passes

Boz Skaggs: on the strength of "Dirty Lowdown"

Taylor Dayne: was on black radio a lot in the 1980's

Steely Dan and Donald Fagen: Don't sleep. "Peg," "Hey Nineteen and "IGY" were the jams backinaday.

Sting: For Dream of the Blue Turtles and "We'll Be Together"

passes under consideration

P!NK definitely can get her pass renewed if she stop with the rocker grrrl sh*t. LOL! C'mon, Pink, come back home! LOL!!! (::thinking of her track "Catch Me While I'm Sleeping":smile

I hope Pink never goes back to doing that top 40 crap from her first album. Her last album produced by Rancid's Tim Armstrong was the best thing she's ever done. She may have lost a lot of fans, but in turn she gained at least one, me.

Tim produced at least half of the 'Try This' album including the first single "Trouble". It was a total flop, but I loved it.

Heatwave? I know they had a few white dudes in the group (rod temperton being one) but they are hardly thought of as a white band. Johnny Wilder was the face and voice of that group and he ain't no white dude.

U'd give 'props' to some for helping 50Cent? disbelief

That is the worst of hip-hop. Geez, the genre is fucked. Even The Roots are dismayed and wondering which direction to go in.

I coi-sign with you more than most orgers, Blaque, but even tho those 2 might deserve "passes," there are more deserving artists than they. Brubeck, Evans, McDonald, et al.
