Next to Debbie Harry, Chrissie was the 70's hottest rock chick.
Let's see: -Stop Your Sobbing -Brass In Pocket -Don't Get Me Wrong (is there a damn 80's nostalgia movie without this on the soundtrack?) -Middle Of The Road -Back On The Chain Gang

Their self-titled debut album is a MUST have for any Pretenders fan. It's very punk-ish, with a bit of new wave thrown in. GET IT!
The 1984 album Learning To Crawl is a MUST have too. GET IT! Chrissie Hynde is a songwriter you can't ignore. My City Was Gone I went back to Ohio But my city was gone There was no train station There was no downtown South Howard had disappeared All my favorite places My city had been pulled down Reduced to parking spaces A, O, way to go Ohio Well I went back to Ohio But my family was gone I stood on the back porch There was nobody home I was stunned and amazed My childhood memories Slowly swirled past Like the wind through the trees A, o, oh way to go Ohio I went back to Ohio But my pretty countryside Had been paved down the middle By a government that had no pride The farms of Ohio Had been replaced by shopping malls And muzak filled the air From Seneca to Cuyahoga Falls Said a, o, oh way to go Ohio Middle of the Road The middle of the road is trying to find me I'm standing in the middle of life with my plans behind me Well I got a smile for everyone I meet As long as you don't try dragging my bay Or dropping the bomb on my street Now come on baby Get in the road Come on now In the middle of the road, yeah In the middle of the road you see the darndest things Like fakirs driving 'round in jeeps through the city Wearing big diamond rings and silk suits Past corrugated tin shacks full up with kids Oh man I don't mean a Hampstead nursery When you own a big chunk of the bloody third world The babies just come with the scenery Oh come on baby Get in the road Oh come on now In the middle of the road, yeah The middle of the road is no private cul-de-sac I can't get from the cab to the curb without some little jerk on my back Don't harass me, can't you tell I'm goin home, I'm tired as hell I'm not the cat I used to be I got a kid, I'm thirty-three Baby, get in the road Come on now In the middle of the road, yeah!! This post not for the wimp contingent. All whiny wusses avert your eyes.

I saw them in concert during the 80s. Chrissie's husband's band, Simple Minds opened. (They weren't that good.) My absolute FAVORITE Pretender's song is "Brass in Pocket." I actually, used to hear this song on urban contemporary radio. (WBLS?) I like "Middle of the Road" too. "It's a Thin Line Between Love & Hate" ain't bad either.

I just noticed that Supernova posted the lyrics to "My City Was Gone." I didn't know that's what it was called. I thought it was "Ohio". This song rocks!
Good grief edit. I didn't mean to quote myself! [This message was edited Wed Aug 18 16:40:38 2004 by UptownDeb]

YESSSSS!!!!! Finally someone mentions The Pretenders
Chrissie: Better than Joan, Lita, Debbie, and Pat if you ask me. This is my favorite album by them. I have no idea why folks didn't like this one, but I think it's great from start to finish. The songs rocked even harder, sound beautifully sweet, and have a lot more attitude to them. Everyone should get this one. Forget the first album (even though that one's great too). It's overrated. Pretenders II is where the real magic happens. Here's my fave Pretenders tunes: Brass in Pocket Mystery Achievement Kid 2000 Miles When I Change My Life Don't Get Me Wrong Time I'll Stand By You How Much Did You Get For Your Soul? Cuban Slide I Hurt You Complex Person Space Invader Back On The Chain Gang Light Of The Moon Private Life I Remember You Precious Show Me Night In My Veins Middle Of The Road their cover of Jimi's "Room Full Of Mirrors" as well as "A Thin Line Between Love & Hate" .....and the entire "II" album!!!!!
