Doves

Does anybody else love the Doves?

They're huge Prince fans too.

erm.....

Doesn't anybody know who I'm on about?

They used to be a dance group called Sub Sub. They had a hit in the early 90s with a song called "Ain't No Love, Ain't No Use".

They're not really that big in England. In fact they are criminally under-rated.

Anyway...

When they were called Sub Sub, they released a track called Southern Trees. It uses the string quartet melody from Purple Rain and works a poppy trip-hop song around it.

Their later stuff as the Doves isn't as blatantly dance-based, but it has a dance sensibility in that real instruments are played live, then sampled, looped and layered to create a dense wall of sound.

Imagine if Coldplay lightened up and got drunk now and again - well, that's basically the Doves.

Each of their albums sound like a soundtrack to an imaginary movie in your head. A lot of the songs aren't gender-specific or even really specific about anything, other than either being happy, sad, lost or found.

Their first album, Lost Souls, sounds like Parade might have sounded if Butch Vig had produced. I really can't recommend their music highly enough.

You have a Doves album or a Sub Sub album?

Either way, you have excellent taste young Alfie.

For MANY, MANY years I have meant to pick up some of their material. I know I'd like them, but for some reason I just have never taken the time. I did see them at Glastonbury last year and was quite impressed. What would you recommend a person start with?

'The Last Broadcast' is a bit more accessible than the first album, so I'd start there if I were you. It's the album with 'Pounding' on, which Althom mentioned.

There's a few video clips online at MTV

Luckily, they've only had three albums out - so it's not too late to get into them.

I can give you a bit more of a description...

Their music sounds like looking at oil in a puddle of water. You know when you can see the rainbow colours and it's completely beautiful even though you know it's just oil in a puddle? Well, that's what the Doves sound like to me.

I really like Doves. Funny, someone said that their last album, THE LAST BROADCAST, was more accessible than their first, LOST SOULS. BROADCAST got stellar reviews on both sides of the Atlantic, but I could never get into it. LOST SOULS is a classic - IMHO. I remember listening to it at night while and friend and I drove through a snowstorm in the mountains. That CD along with Radiohead's KID A made for one amazing but creepy road trip.

The two DOVES albums (to me) almost sound like two different bands. Didn't they put out a b-sides/outtakes album a little while ago? Or am I thinking of someone else? Has anybody heard it? If so, is it worth picking up?

Yep. They have a B-Sides album called 'Lost Sides'. Actually, there's two Doves B-Sides albums called 'Lost Sides' but the earlier incarnation was a promo-only release. The retail version has a slightly different tracklist.

You'll like it if you enjoyed the darker feel of the first album.

Here's 'Zither' from the 'Lost Sides' album.

It sounds a lot like 'An Honest Man' from the opening of Under The Cherry Moon.

Cool. I've never seen them live and they only live about thirty minutes away from me!

If you want some unreleased stuff, let me know!
