Just wondering if anybody feels, like I do, that music has not been as good since the 80's? The 80's was a decade where you could turn on your radio and always hear a great song playing. It doesn't seem to be that way as much anymore. Kind of makes me wonder what happened to all the great songwriters who penned those great 80's songs. Just wondering if anybody feels the same way I do. Feel free to post your thoughts.

I agree!! I dont even listen 2 the radio anymore!! Also theres no new artist or performer that are out now that interests me!! I havent a clue who is in what band!! And all the new female singers all look the same regardless of whether they are black or white!!!

Ive got more talent in my small toe than ANY of the "performers" have now!!! They should all go back 2 working at BK or MacDonalds, where they all belong!!!

New music was always coming out and it was actually good...the videos sucked but that didnt matter
The right people always won the award not the most popular and back then I didnt have to wait to see if the next single would be better b4 I bought the whole album...I knew the album would be good

For me, I think since the mid-90s. I enjoyed the "grunge rock" era and early 90s R&B.

Maybe you're not searching hard enough for new and challenging music.

i wouldn't say its gone TOTALLY downhill...cuz ya kno i am a 90's baby and all so i kinda gotta rep 4 my generation u feel me? but 2 b honest i don't like most of whats out now...only like Alicia Keys, Pink, Christina Aguilera, Linkin Park and people like that...u'll catch me listenin to somethin from the 70's or 80's b4 u'll catch me listenin to somethinthats out now..with those few exeptions..,,

Every decade has wack-ass music. It hasn't been downhill since the '80s, it STARTED going downhill in the '80s. Thank Mtv for that. And every decade has great music too...just don't search for it all on the radio.

Sure the 90's had "Tubthumping" and "Blame It On The Rain" (Wilson Phillips too!) but the 80's had its fair share of crap as well. But I still look back on that decade with fondness and love.

I think there's been a prolonged lull in pop music since the mid-nineties. There's certainly been some worthy music produced in the past eight years, but I don't think there's been a genuinely interesting musical movement in that time.

I actually consider the late eighties through mid-nineties to be something of a golden age for popular music, somewhat akin to the punk/new wave explosion. You had My Bloody Valentine releasing (in my opinion) the first revolutionary guitar-rock record since Are You Experienced, Primal Scream and the Stone Roses fusing psychedelia with dance floor rhythms, and Portishead, Massive Attack and Tricky making hip-hop for extremely lethargic people. I really don't think we've seen equivalent waves of interesting and entertaining acts since that era, but I'm sure something worthwhile will rear its head eventually.

People have thought music has gone downhill since the days of ragtime, jazz and big band. Olde timers though music died with the advent of "rock 'n' roll" (or jungle music, as it was called by bigoted whites -- and asked for the destruction of records by Chuck Berry, Little Richard, The Dominoes, etc.) With each changing generation, older music listeners turn their nose up at the current crop of artists.

Times have changed. Yes, the music of the '60s, '70s and '80s rocked. But, we have to face the facts, new kids have grown up and they like the music of the '90s, '00s and right now. It's not "cheap" or "trash," it's just not your taste. Maybe you're older, maybe your pallette isn't craving these particular styles of music, but you can't trash it simply because it's new and you're not feeling the style or new groove.

No, music has not gone downhill. It's still good. Just find the artist or music you like.

I'm 19, and I thought most modern music was shit when I was 15. The majority of kids today, thanks to corporate radio and MTV, are basically not exposed to good music. Shit is all they know, therefore they believe it's good due to lack of alternative. You said yourself in another thread that you absolutely hate it when some dumb teenager has absolutely no idea that a cover version is actually a cover version ("this is like, so awesome and original") and that the "artists" they respect do nothing but sample and mime. Well, that's ignorance, not a "different" taste.

i don't think so, it just seems you have to look harder these days to find good music, but it's definitly out there

AMEN! Very well said. I think music started going downhill since 1985. The late 1980s still had some good music but not nearly as much good stuff as the early 1980s. Ballads were starting to take over R&B in the late 1980s. Most of the stripped down mid tempo rap was underground and only the good rap was played on the radio. House music was underground and entered mainstream radio around 1989.

When house music became mainstream, I thought we were back on the right track again. Everyone started doing uptempo music again and it looked like things were getting back on track. Then EVERYONE started doing a house remix of their song. Every time you turned around, house mix this and house mix that. You can wear too much of a good thing out.

As for rap and hip hop, I used to love it in the early 1980s when the songs were fun and for the dance floor. In the early 1990s "gansta" rap became mainstream and that was the beginning of the end. It had been underground for years but then white kids started buying it. I think this is when these major corporations saw they could make big money off a cheap form of music. By around 1993 or 1994, hip hop had completely taken over and has dominated radio ever since. As long as these corporations are controlling everything, hip hop is not going anywhere.

By 1995, as a long time funk/R&B lover, I stopped listening to R&B radio and started listening to pop/rock radio. Then I noticed hip hip was making it's way into rock music. Another trend I don't like is the accoustic trend. EVERYBODY started doing accoustical stuff. I felt like singing "Michael rode the boat ashore....hallelujah!"

Now I only listen to oldies stations and Clear Channel owns them too. Out of YEARS and YEARS of music out there, they play the same songs several times a day. It's rediculous.

Funny you should mention the bands Poison and White Lion, I love those 80's groups, they had some kick ass songs out back in the day. I also look back on the 80's with fondness and love.
