This is the refrain from my favorite Beatles track of all time, "Across The Universe". There has been much speculation as to the meaning of the phrase. A loose, often given translation is: "I give thanks to my heavenly teacher". It is Sanskrit, I believe. I'll be interested to see other answers.

P.S. You're one of my favorite Orgers.

"Jai" - means - "O Hail" or "Praise be"

"Guru" - means - "Teacher"

"Deva" - means - "God/Lord/Demi-God" or when used as a suffix in this context, shows the

teacher is held in high esteem and with great respect.

"Om" or "Aum" - means - .....strictly, is not a word but more a 'sound' for the symbol . For the followers of the Sanatan Dharma it resonates the sound that created the universe and is held sacred and synonymous with God in many forms and functions.

Hope this also helps with the other information here. smile

Jai = Victory to...!

Guru = Teacher - literally "the one who removes the root of ignorance"

Deva = Goddess (but may have a more qualified meaning in this phrase)

Om = The meaning of om requires lifetimes of contemplation.

Om is said to be the source of all existence which has emanated from the subtlemost vibration or sound: A-u-m

A = creation
U = preservation
M = destruction

This phrase is in sanskrit and may be used as a mantra. If repeated over and over, it cleanses the mind of impurities.
