Kravitz on Kimmel

Lenny performed on Jimmy Kimmel Live Concert Series sporting his new "I'm not trying to look like Prince" look.

Maybe he was listening to James Brown's How You Gonna Get Respect (If You Haven't Cut Your Process Yet).

All kidding aside, I think it's a decent look.
Didn't sound bad either.

Uh, I don't see what the issue is with Lenny and the man's hair. Although I can relate with what Lenny's been getting, because I get the same shit. I've wore my hair long since I was a little kid. I've been compared to every black male artists who has or has had hair. Hendrix to Snoop Dog, and it's irritating as hell. Sure, I'm used to it now, but..it still gets under my skin when I see other people knocking another brother over some petty shit like someone's hair. Prince doesn't own ANY hairstyle. I seriously doubt Lenny changed his hair because of people comparing him to Prince. The brother probably just wanted a change. That is his God given right, isn't it? What I find interesting is that when Lenny was wearing dreads, no one was saying he was trying to be like Bob Marley. Why not? Marley was a musical legend.

If Lenny's first album was all reggae, he would have gotten a lot of Bob Marley comparisons.

Of course in a perfect world it should be your "hairstyle doesn't matter".
But without getting into a big political/sociological conversation, unfortunately it's a conversation that is many times bubbling under the surface right or wrong.

I didn't pick up on the Kravitz "trying to look like Prince" theme until I joined the org and just used it to provoke some conversation.

Personally, it's his hair and I couldn't care less.

If all the hippies cut off all their hair
Oh I don't care, oh I don't care.
Dig...
'Cause I've got my own world to live through and uh,
And I ain't gonna copy you.

If Lenny's first album was all reggae, he would have gotten a lot of Bob Marley comparisons.

Say if Lenny did do reggae, first album or tenth album, he would have still gotten compared to Marley, regardless of his hairstyle. That wasn't my point though. My point was that when Lenny did wear dreads, no one tripped because it didn't bother any one that he wore dreads. No one cared. When Lenny cut his dreads and was wearing an uncombed afro, same thing, he didn't catch heat for it. He was still doing the same style of music. Minute he decides to do something a little different to it by pressing it out, here comes the put downs saying NOW he's trying to look like P. Like I said earlier, P doesn't own any hair style. When Andre 3000 had pressed his hair for the video "He Ya", Andre didn't catch nearly as much hell, if any, as much as Lenny did. I think it's something else behind all the hate for Lenny. But that's a whole different topic.

I think it's because there were so many associations between Lenny and Prince before the change in hairstyle that Lenny got the criticism that he did. Andre 3000 doesn't play funk-rock like Lenny and hasn't performed with Prince on several occasions. That's why he's in the clear.

Sometimes I suspect that some of the members of this board have very little contact with culture outside of Prince. Prince in no way shape or form has dibs on the perm. There are too many examples of that. Even when he first started, perms were everywhere. Lenny tried the perm because it was something new for him. He's had the fro, the dreads, cornrows, etc. It was just a matter of time. Since perms break your hair off, you eventually have to cut your hair to move on to something else. Common sense. People on here sometimes try to make more out of something than what's already there. Lots of Lenny haters on here, including me. I'm not fond of him, but its because I'm not that fond of his music in general, not because he's "trying to be like Prince" as so many others see him. Prince wasn't in any of Lenny's studio sessions. Even though I'm not that fond of him, I give him his due because he's put out a lot of music and has established his corporate rock ass well into the anals of music history. Lenny is destined for the R&R Hall of Fame whether the haters like it or not. People go see Lenny because they like him. He earned that. Prince "fams" or whatever seem to condemn anyone who shows talent and style as if its some threat to Prince or something. Hairstyles? Come on, now! Please do better than that! rolleyes

Lenny should have kept the dreads...Keith Hamilton Cobb should have kept his as well...it's amazing how a hairstyle can completely change someone's looks (and not for the better). Gary Dourdan is the only one I know of who cut off his dreads but still is a looker...I wonder what the next style will be for Lenny...maybe bald...he has'nt done that yet has he?

I'm kinda with Blaque, but I have to admit, I wondered why the hell he dropped the natural (which worked for him) and went with the perm. But still, while Lenny's made a good array of songs, it's impossible to ignore the Prince influence, just as it is impossible to ignore the many obvious influences in Prince's music. Lenny's music isn't transcendant, much of it is disappointing, but it's good enough. He tries and succeeds a lot of the time. That's good enough for me.

well at first i was shocked by the perm look, but i got use to it and i even started to like it, then when i saw lenny on kimmel, he looked like something was missing. I love when he performs how he jerks his neck back and forth, but now he has nothing on his head to shake with it. Well this was just my observation...guess i'll have to wait a few months when he grows something on that head of his.
I will forever love and miss you...my sweet Prince.

Cool out dude Lenny just did look good with the perm.

"Prince "fams" or whatever seem to condemn anyone who shows talent and style as if its some threat to Prince or something"

I don't think anyone on this board thinks that Lenny is a threat to Prince. I think the RnR Hall of Fame performance put an end to that speculation.

I hear ya. Some fans in another thread on this site were talking about one of Lenny's recent videos and how it was so reminiscent of a scene in Purple Rain. The one where came off-stage, stormed down the hallway, and plopped down into his seat in front of his mirror in his dressing room. I didn't think anything of all the claims .... till I actually saw the video. It's more like a parody than simply being reminiscent of it. lol
