POSTMORTEM: TOP 10 RICK JAMES CUTS

I always had mixed feelings about Rick James because he lifted musical ideas freely from P-Funk, but would never acknowledge it and, of course, had his feud with Prince. However, he produced some of the most bad-ass funk of all time and put on a killer concert. I saw him at the L.A. Forum in 1982 at the peak of his popularity and he was fantastic, giant oversized joint up on stage (another Funakdelic lift) and all. I am deeply saddened by his passing. I thought his comeback album a few years ago, Urban Rhapsody, was the best thing he had done since his prime.

As a tribute, here are my top 10 tunes from the original Slick Rick:

Super Freak (12-inch version)
Give It to Me Baby
Big Time
Bustin' Out
You and I
Ghetto Life
Standing on the Top (long version)
Turn It Out
Cold Blooded
High on Your Love Suite

Peace and RIP RJ,
Scott

I've been listening to Rick James music all weekend long, one album after another. This man has left us with some of the funkiest jams of ALL TIME,and it's hard to narrow it down to just ten songs. But I'll try my best...

You And I (1978)
Mary Jane (1978)
Bustin' Out (1979)
Big Time (1980)
Ghetto Life (1981)
Mr. Policeman (1981)
Give It To Me Baby (1981)
69 Times (1982)
Cold Blooded (1983)
17 (1984)

These songs and many others were part of the soundtrack of my teenage years. And I continued to follow Rick's career long after his early 80s heyday. His last CD 'Urban Rapsody' (1997) is one of his strongest, most consistent albums.

What really makes me mad is....in the mid-90s,not too long after the release of the 2-CD 'Bustin Out' compilation,Motown actually remastered the 'Bustin Out Of L Seven' CD but it was only available for a brief time!! I remember seeing it in the record stores, and I was gonna go back and get it.But it soon disappeared and I could just kick myself for not picking it up when i saw it.I have major problems with the way Motown/Universal handles the back catalogs of their artists, but that's another thread, lol.
