i read this seconds before reading your comments:

But even with my un-Olympian excitement, this year I feel particularly dulled to the Games. A lot of that is due more to the TV coverage than the Games themselves, I think. American Olympics coverage is a lot like American political convention coverage, more full of commentator bloviating and canned features than actual sport.

It's not that way elsewhere in the world. When I worked the '96 Games from the media center, you could watch coverage from the CBC or Australia's Channel 7, two networks more interested in the game at hand than promoting its announcers or whiz-bang graphics. Those out there who have big-league satellite dishes will see the difference.

It fucking pissed me off!!! mad And they further ruined it by that in the editing room (since the show was tape delayed in the US) NBC mostly chose camera angles that didn't focus on Bjork at all! I'm not kidding, they only showed her for about 20 seconds! They would pan to shots way above the arena, the sky or to the audience. They treated that performance like it was just background elevator music for Katie and Bob chitchatting. They lowered the sound of her singing and music way down so we can hear such witty banter as "Mr Blackwell better get a look at this" or "All of the blue color symbolises water". rolleyes

when a broadcaster is less interested in the event being covered, and more interesting in doing shtickle, it's time to hang up the credentials..... nod

I just saw that about 15 minutes ago (I'm out west), and I don't ever remember opening ceremonies being THIS long! I guess introducing all the countries is necessary tho, and I actually like the lighting of the torch...but all this other stuff is getting on my nerves! Move it along people, get to the games, dayyuumm! mad

And Bjork shoulda sang "MOTOR CRASH"! At least she would have drowned Costas out!

Yeah, it'll be called Looking For Bob Costas, and in it we beat the crap outta him along with whoever at NBC is responsible for this!

Why can't they show this LIVE on NBC anyway...nothing else on that network I wanna see...until football season. biggrin

At least her dress was pretty. smile But I did notice that too (not focusing on her).... sad Bjork was the only reason I recorded the Ceremony in the first place.

I switched from Dutch to UK too. Isn't it great to have multiple sources, living in Europe?

The Dutchies were talking rubbish.

The entire passage with the boy in the paper boat went like this;

Screen shows water.

Commentator; We see water.

Screen shows boat.

Commentator; We see a boat.
Screen shows boy on boat.

Commentator; We see a boat with a boy in it.

Etc etc

I was watching with a friend, reached for the remote and said; We see Gooey switch the channel to the BBC.

I just downloaded the performance online. I don't know what country it's recorded from but it's a huge difference from the NBC footage. They actually show Bjork and there is no "The blue symbolises water" chichattering. biggrin

He's getting a letter from me too!!!! The other thing that annoyed me was ~ with all of the incredible one could say about Bjork, what does he focus on? The Swan costume. How very mundane of him.

Anxiety

i really hope their big-ass mouths get ten times the browbeating that bjork got when she wore her swan dress to the oscars. i'd hope she'd get a kick out of that, but i'm sure she couldn't be bothered to care.

The Olympics just started and I'm already starting to feel sick of them.

Bjork's performance and the opening ceremony as a whole would've been great without any commentary. Make people think and not spell out everything. It's exactly how Gooey was saying-"We see a boat" and every little bit spelled out.

I'm not asking for high art on network TV here, just some sort of option for them to keep their oh so "witty banter" to a bare minimum. Nobody cares but them. If Bob was talking about an athletes history-great, tell us more about their background. Not when somebody's performing though.

Beautiful imagery I thought but it ended up sounding like a badly acted 2nd grade play with Bob and Katie sounding like the kid's that got chosen as narrators stumbling through their lines.

They don't need to rerun the stuff we missed at night either. I had to leave after the opening ceremony for work and then I come home and it's on again. Unless I'm wrong and it just took hours and hours for them to get to flag ceremony still.

This year was a little better with a gorgeous presentation-but it would've been so much more powerful without the blind commentary.

"We see a boat."

"What?!? Where? Earl is that you!?"

Fucking sports! They think that sports cannot possibly be interesting without a play by play, even when we're not actually watching sports (like, for instance, when we're watching a musical performance).

Idiotic comments (i'm paraphrasing here):

"I hope they know when to stop pulling at the dress or she'll go flying off the stage"

"Central African Republic, as we like to point out, is in Central Africa"

When will they realize that play by play was designed for radio, and is not necessary when you're actually watching the event?
