Duran Duran Relaunch

Reunited quintet to release "Astronaut" in October

Duran Duran have finished work on their new album, Astronaut, tentatively scheduled for release in October on Epic. It marks the first time the band's original lineup -- singer Simon Le Bon, keyboardist Nick Rhodes, bassist John Taylor, guitarist Andy Taylor and drummer Roger Taylor -- has worked together since 1985 for the "A View to a Kill" single.

"We were like, 'We can still do this! After fifteen some years! How exciting!" Le Bon says. The reunited group recorded the new material in three different stages. They initially got back together in 2002, and spent some time writing new material in the south of France. After a brief reunion tour last year, the band headed off to England, splitting time between two studios. Most of the new material was recorded in the past few months with Linkin Park producer Don Gilmore, although R&B hitmaker Dallas Austen was brought in at the last minute to do some additional work.

"He just offers a different approach," Le Bon says. "You won't be able to notice who does what on the album."

The new material already appears to be far more eclectic than previous Duran Duran releases. Even the talkative frontman has a hard time summing up its sound. "It's like the Mamas and Papas meets Kraftwerk," he says. Le Bon labels the new track "Taste of Summer" as simply "fantastic, beautiful, warm, hot and sexy," which may not explain much as far as sound, but does bode well for fans turned off by the midtempo electro-pop of the group's mid-Nineties output.

Other potential standout tracks are "Bedroom Toys," a disco-funk throwback featuring Chic's Nile Rodgers, and the title track. "Nobody believed in 'Astronaut' except us," LeBon says, laughing. "It's like 'Girls on Film' -- it doesn't sound like anything else out there, and it has a strange chorus. But Dallas finally got it and helped us make a great song."

Duran Duran recently shot a video for the first single, "(Reach Up for the) Sunrise," directed by the Polish Brothers (Twin Falls Idaho), though the band members provided most of the footage themselves. In the spirit of the group's early exotic and action-packed videos, the clip shows John Taylor wandering the California desert, Le Bon racing a motorcycle through the countryside in Spain, Roger Taylor cruising in a car around England, Andy Taylor hanging out in an Ibiza club and Rhodes hovering in a spaceship over London.

Although LeBon is clearly excited about creating flashy videos with his old mates, he takes particular pride in the music. "It's a real complete album," he says. "It'll be the kind of album where you can listen to the whole thing in one go, rather than going on tea breaks."

DURAN DURAN’S “SUNRISE” ON THE HORIZON

VIDEO TO FIRST SINGLE FROM ‘ASTRONAUT’ DIRECTED BY THE POLISH BROTHERS

New York, NY-- The excitement continues to grow surrounding the release of ‘Astronaut,’ Duran Duran’s first studio album in 21 years with all five original band members back together. Adding to the buzz is today’s announcement that the first single from the band’s forthcoming album will be “(Reach Up for the) Sunrise,” the video for which Duran Duran has just finished shooting in six different locations in three countries, with feature film directors The Polish Brothers ("Twin Falls Idaho," “Jackpot” and “Northfolk”).

Produced by Duran Duran and Don Gilmore (Good Charlotte, Linkin Park, Avril Lavigne, Pearl Jam), '(Reach Up For The) Sunrise' was one of the first tracks to be written for the band's new album, during a month-long writing and pre-production session in the South of France, some 18 months ago. The song was recently re-cut at Sphere Studios in London, with Don Gilmore at the helm alongside the band. Jeremy Wheatley (Massive Attack, Sugababes, The Dandy Warhols, ) mixed the track at Olympic Studios in London and Ted Jensen mastered it at Sterling Sound in New York.

Duran Duran shot the innovative video for Sunrise with Mark and Michael Polish over a period of a week, taking in locations in the US, UK and Spain. As part of this extraordinarily creative concept, each of the band members was captured on a different film format - from 35 mm, 8mm, and High Definition to mini-DV, symbolizing their five very individual personalities. These formats will be cut together in post-production to create something
visually spectacular and unique.

Filmed both in the studio and on location, the band members worked with the Polish Brothers to develop their own separate story-lines, which show each of them journeying to get back together for a stunning performance of the song as the sun comes up.
Day One, John Taylor was filmed walking through the Californian desert. Day Two, Nick Rhodes could be seen in a spaceship, flying around the streets of London as the capitol's Friday night traffic came to a standstill. Day Three Roger Taylor test drove a vintage E-Type Jaguar, filming some of the video footage himself,as he sped through London's winding one-way streets. Following this, the crew relocated to the Spanish Pyrennes to film Simon LeBon - who performed all of his own stunts - riding a rare, off-road racing bike through rugged mountain terrain.. And on the final day of filming, Andy Taylor was captured working his way through a 10,000 capacity crowd at Ibiza's ManuMission nightclub. The results promise to live up to Duran Duran's unparalleled reputation for making spectacular videos.

Tune in to WPLJ in NYC (95.5fm) on Wednesday, August 11th at 8:15am to hear “(Reach Up for the) Sunrise.” WPLJ’s Scott and Todd will also interview the band in the “Big Show” studios.

‘Astronaut’ will be released October 12th on Epic Records.

I sent a tape for the SF radio contest, but I'm not holding my breath to be one of the five. I think hanging out in front of the radio station sounds like a good alternative plan. Thanks for keeping us posted Vina!

Oh yes, i've celebrated many b-days pretending I was with Simon. LOL. So I'm at my parents house this weekend and I'm looking through old pictures and I found one from like 1984 (I was 9) standing next to a pic of John Taylor (probably from BOP or Teen Beat) smiling after I had lost another tooth. And I remember asking my sister to take such a memorable moment next to my 'boy toy'-- i'm going to scan it when i get back to NYC and entertain all you DD fans. Just kidding...I'll show it to sassy so he can laugh at me.
