Ol'School MJ Joint of the Day: "Speed Demon"

It's rarely discussed but this song is hott!! "Eat yo ticket!" Love the feeling of the thing, and that furious chorus bassline! guitar I have the Bad songbook, the bass clef looks so busy in that bit just crazy eek My piano teacher, who spent twenty years studying music theory in Russia, said it was too hard for him!

(Oh and I think we'd all rather forget about the claymation video hmm)

Oh my gosh, Speed Demon is the shit next to Smooth Criminal. The Bad album was Michael at his best and i think that it was a hell of an effort in order to top Thriller. Plus he was still looking masculine back in those days....

The lyrics to that song were crap but the song itself was somewhat catchy.
Also i hated "Another part of me," Quincy decided to put that in when Michael wanted "Streetwalker," (a much better song)

Otherwise the rest of the album is awesome

Dirty Diana is the best track followed by Smooth Criminal

Oh and "Leave me alone" was too whiny.

Yep Streetwalker is great. And I'm sure mike loves it too, coz he uses the intro to Streetwalker as the intro to the way u make me feel at concerts, when he's behind that curtain.

Man, I couldn't believe my ears the first time I heard "Speed Demon".
Ugh. That and "Just Good Friends" are probably the only two songs from Bad that I gotta skip.

I agree, those two songs are crap.If MJ had replaced those songs with two stronger tracks, the album would have been excellent. As it stands,it's a very good, but not great album.

Hey I love that track, gotta play it again now.....man, when "Bad" first came out, that track must sounded mean when compared to other stuff around that time.....I know "Dangerous" album sounded state of the art at the time.....as i bought it when it had only just come out!

Oh and the "Speed demon" bit in "Moonwalker" is one of the best bits in whole movie.....it's weird and the bit at the end when he dances with the bunny is sheer class!

Man, Michael can write some funky shit can't he!

I think "Another Part Of Me" and "Man In The Mirror" are the two best tracks. But "Streetwalker" would have been a cool replacement for either "Speed Demon" or "Just Good Friends".

I like Speed Demon. It's not great but the music is pretty infectious.

He should have replaced Just Good Friends with Streetwalker and ditched Leave Me Alone and then Bad would've been great instead of good. smile

Yeah i still have the moonwalker vhs too!!! I remember watching that in front of the tv when i was 6!!!

And on my gosh how can I forget Joe Pesci and that ponytail!!! And the nuts that turned into tarantulas!!! The tightest scene ever was when he did Smooth Criminal.

Did the original pressing of Bad have 'Leave Me Alone'?
'cuz my LP doesn't...

I don't like the BAD album that much...I hate its production.

People seem to like all his Quincy produced albums but my favorite is Dangerous. It was his most deepest and creative work.
I love "Will you be there," and "heal the world." Then he has great dance tunes like "Jam" "Remember the time." Then "Black or White," a dance song with Slash on guitar sending out an important message breaking down the color lines.

It was initially only available on the CD as a bonus track. I think it was the 8th single off the album in the UK and still managed to hit #2, only missing out on the #1 by less than a hundred sales.

As for speed demon, i like it even though i think it's one of the weaker cuts. Nice groove on that plus a good falsetto from mike.

those were the days. biggrin

if "Just Good Friends" wasn't on Bad, then "Speed Demon" would be the worst song on the album. in fact, he didn't top the shittiness of these two tracks until way into the 90's.

Speed Demon is great. Such an unusual song with lots of attitude. I think the 80's production actually helps this song which is rare. I don't remember hearing anything like Speed Demon before or since. Great stuff!

Just Good Friends to me is the only real weak point on the album. That is why to this day it is my favourite MJ album.

To be honest though the "Leave me Alone" video was cool, all the cool backgrounds and Michael floating down the river or whatever he was doing. And all the pictures of Liz Taylor, total awesomeness.

It's not even on DVD, i want that video now!

"Speed Demon" and "Smooth Criminal" are my two favorite tracks from the "Bad" album. The rest of that album sounds a little too "poppish" for my taste.

I'm a big fan of "Just good friends"..

...love that chorus and production.....though the other MJ/Stevie wonder duet "Get it" was better though.....Michael sounds great on that track.....maybe if a video 4 "Get it" was made then the single wouldn't of been such a bomb.....anyway "Just good friends" beats the hell out of "The girl is mine" and by far the worst track on "Bad" is "Liberian girl".....maybe Mike can write good ballads ("I just cant stop loving u" is a good example) but that track was pretty poor 4 him!
