Sony disses Fiona Apple. This article explains why Sony won't release Fiona Apple's new album.
Dumb? http://www.salon.com/ent/.../04/apple/

Yes, it's dumb. She should release it on her own. So what if there is "no single"? That's so stupid. All that means is that it doesn't sound like anything on the radio. That's a good thing in my book.

I really don't want to sound like I'm coming down on the side of the labels but didn't Prince write "1999" after his management told him the album wasn't good enough?
Damon Albarn, of Blur, also wrote "Chemical World" (one of my favourite Blur songs) after the label rejected Modern Life Is Rubbish saying that it had no singles. In this case I think it's obvious that the artist isn't going to budge, so Sony should just get the damn album released, but in some cases label interferance can be a good thing.

She might concede, but I feel that to reject her whole album, then for her to have to buy it back (A whole subject I'm sure Prince would be happy to elaborate on) is an injustice. If you don't want the songs then why make the person who created them BUY them back? Alicia Keys was almost forced to do the same thing with her first album.

Yeah, well, kinda sorta. I heard the same thing about Maroon 5. The first single was written specifically to be a hit. The album was rejected and he was told to write a hit single. The rest of the album is really good, imo. I don't see why it would be rejected without that one song.

the fact that she ruined two beautiful performances from the sessions of Johnny Cash's American IV: The Man Comes Around ("Bridge Over Trouble Water" and "Father And Son") is reason enough for her ass to be run out of the music industry for good. "I don't need your forgiveness, cos I've been saved by Jesus, so fuck you."

Maybe that was a miscalculation on Mr. Cash's part. Or Rick Rubin's. I can't imagine anyone saying no to him, even if they weren't artistically compatible. Fiona has plenty of good songs on her own. The fact that she does the best version of "Across The Universe" out there says something for her.

If she's that much of an artist, she should just sabotage her relationship with Sony by "leaking" the entire album onto the internet. There - problem solved. If it's really that good, she'll make money back by doing a tour.
